The appointment of a new business manager for the elub was deemed to be an itoni of great importance impor-tance and it was, thought, best to wait until tho complete membership of the board could be in attendance. President ilurphy announced after the meeting that only a few applications applica-tions for the position had been received. The appointment of Jack Cook of the Oaks, it is understood, was discussed informally bv the directors present at yesterday's mooting, but tho sense of the attendant members was not made known, if, indeed, it wero expressed. As a matter of keeping the record straight, the resignation of AV. .1. O'Connor, O'Con-nor, former business manager, was accepted ac-cepted and filed. Tho contract with Manager Bern-hard Bern-hard also was ratified. Las Vegas Not Ready. The report of Manager Bill Bern-hard Bern-hard on l.as Vegas as it training site being unfavorable, it was ordered that President Murphy and Manager Bern-hard Bern-hard be given power to select another site. Bernhard returned from Las Vegas yesterday afternoon. He was much impressed im-pressed 'with the climatic advantages of tho place and dcvlarod that the people, peo-ple, had treated him with Ihe utmost hospitality. Las Vegas, however, was not vet ready to care for a ball club in the throes' of training, he reported. The facilities for field work and the peculiar demands of a ball club in training train-ing in the way of housing were inadequate, inade-quate, he said." Next year, in his opinion. opin-ion. Las Vegas would make an ideal place for conditioning the Saints, lie expressed keen regret that he could not take his club there this spring, but, inasmuch as the necessary conveniences were not up to requirements at this time, he thought it best to wait until next vear before selecting Las Vegas. Bcriihard spoke warmly in praise of the courtesies which had been extended to him and J. S. Early, city passenger agent of the Salt Lake Koute, who accompanied ac-companied him. ami gave it as his opinion opin-ion that, so far as weather conditions were concerned, no better place could be desired thau the hustling Nevada towu. Looks Like Porterville. President Murphy was notified yes-terdav yes-terdav bv a local bank that a deposit of lti00 made by the Chamber of Commerce, Com-merce, of Porterville, Cal., was awaiting the decision of the Salt Lake club to select Porterville as its training ground?. Mr. Murphy said last night That Porterville would no doubt be selected, se-lected, but tirst he wanted to make sure of proper hotel accommodations. ith a view to gaining assuiauces .on this point, he disn.irched another telegram t the Porterville people, and expects a replv carlv today. In the event that the reply is satisfactory satis-factory which undoubtedly it will be President Murphy and Manager Bernhard will stop 'off at Porterville cm their wav to the schedule meeting at San Francisco, which is booked for February Feb-ruary -j, or thereabouts. Has Good Park. L Porterville is said to be one of the prettiest spots in eastern California. It is about sixty miles from Fresno .md a. like distance from BakersfieM. Vlt has it population of some (1000 and s in the heart of a famous orange district. dis-trict. It is noted for its parks and is Vid to have a baseball plant which V'asures up to a modern league park. IThe directors who attended ester-V ester-V s meeting were F. S. Murphy, M. - '.vans, II. W. Lure and George F. J ou. Georco f). '1 feel that it is an honor,'' said .Mr. Murphy, "but i had hoped to sec i FRANK S. MURPHY, who is chosen president of Salt Lake baseball club for third time. . 1 til some other man in tho place thia year. The office requires a good deal of time anil . attention, and there is nuu-h of what is termed 'grief attached to it, but baseball is worth it. It was the fee I iny; of the other directors that I shouM take the place again this year because we have a new playing manager man-ager and will have a new business manager, man-ager, and the board members thought the experience 1 have had in the past two years and the .knowledge of tbe detail's of the club 's af fairs that comes of that experience would be a help to both playing and business managers. And that is why t h e c . p i c k e d on me again." i |
