Show State High School Hoop Tournament Is Holding Interest of Utah Fans Scholastic Basketball Champions on Last Stretch Before Grand Finale; Sensational Race in Salt Lake Division Will Make Several Games Necessary; Many Towns Make Offers for Staging Title Contests. THE most crucial week of competition compe-tition of the entire season with the exception of the state finals, appears to bo tho card for the champs of various divisions and sections sec-tions throughout the state. In no division di-vision has a title yet been decided and from present indications perhaps two teams to go to the state tourney will not know until the Monday of the tournament tour-nament week. It was thought that the shifting of the tournament from the first week in March to the second would relieve this crowded situation, but from the present outlook matters are just as bad as of yore. Before the dates were changed tennis played perhaps three or four games during the week before the state finals and then one in the tourney week aud as a result would make a very poor showing in the state moot, but the shifting shift-ing has done little to aid iv 4,'.'tJg thj contesting teams a complete rest ' lP fore the finnl classic. Utah county will have either Lehi or Springville. Then the Southern champs play Sanpete-Sevier titlehold-ers titlehold-ers to decide the team to go to the meet. The greatest amount of interest shown last week in the Salt Lake divi sion was the victory of the East High over the West High by one point. This win tied East, West and Tooele for first place. The showing of the Leopards was scintillating and the East High followers follow-ers have fond hopes of their repeating should the teams meet again. The East siders are confident that their war-Tiors war-Tiors will win out in the tieoff and expect ex-pect to clean up the L. D. After section two has played the games to decide the champs, arrangements arrange-ments will then be made for the series se-ries with the L. D. S. U. winner of section one. Coach Henry Eichardson was in favor of one game and he declared de-clared his willingness to play at the Deseret gymnasium. Coaches Tommy Htzpatrick, East High, and J. W. West Tooele, want two games and three if nece-ssary. This would put one game on to the Deseret g"m floor and one to the other school and if a third was necessary nec-essary it would be played on a neutral neu-tral floor. It is planned to start the Inter-section games Friday. Saturday and Monday would be the other dates. The games between the three schools for the section title promise to be pome battles. With added confidence the Leopards should make trouble for all the quintettes, while West High and Tooele are still going at a speedy gait. The L. D. 8. (I. has had some soft competition in the section, but will have a tough battle in the finals of the division, although tho Gold aud Blue are regarded favorites to carry off the honors. i Lehi and Springrillft play Thursday and Saturday. The place has not hcen decided for" the firt gamp, hut the coaches will settle this point probably by a tossup. Jf a third game is necessary nec-essary the place will be either Prove or Pleasant Grovo. Homer Ifoisington and Malcolm Watson a pear to be the probable choices for officials. Springrville is the favorite although much depends upon whether Weight, the star center, will be in condition to play. He is having considerable trouble trou-ble with his knee, but expects to be ready hy the time the scries arrives. In the Sanpete section of the Sanpete-Sevier division, Snow academy ha had things its way from the start anrl has won every game, ho the Kphraim boys must play the Salina quint, champ? of "the Sevier section. This pa me wili be held at either Mt. Pleasant or Manti about Tuesday of this week. A regular squabble ha developed ovei the Southern division. Hinckley, champs of the Northern half, want a three-game three-game series, which will probably be opposed op-posed by everyone in the Southern half, because Dixie and B. A. C. played ofl the tio Saturday and the time is too short, as the champs in this division must play in the Sanpete-Sevier division divi-sion later in the week. From all indications the K. A. C. is tho favorite to be in the stntn irit from the south. 'Jack lirit m" I quint has been sluing a turrituf of late, and a team must Mi W' ' ful ball to iut it down. tr " |
