Show TOMATO CANNERS IN PESSIMISTIC MOOD Owing to Unfavorable Weather, Total Pack to Date Is 40 Per Cent, With Final probably 60 Per Cent. Special to The Tribune. OGDEN, Oct. 8. With a good opportunity oppor-tunity at the outset of the season to obtain ob-tain a 100 per cent pack. It is doubtful at this time whether the tomato canners of the state will be able to get more than a 60 per cent pack, owing to unfavorable unfavor-able weather conditions, according to W. J. Parker, president of the Utah Canners' association. Mr. Parker stated today that the factories fac-tories have been in operation thirty-five days, yet the total pack at this time Is probably not more than 40 per cent of normal. This is due to the fact that unfavorable weather in almost every part of the territory ter-ritory has caused the tomatoes to ripen very slowly, according to Mr. Parker. On top of this early frosts have caused considerable damage to the crop In northern north-ern sections of the country, and in the south patches of tomatoes have been destroyed de-stroyed by frost. While it is still possible possi-ble to obtain nearly a normal pack, the association head believes the chances are slight. About twelve years ago, Mr. Parker recalled today, the canners of Utah were able to continue packing tomatoes until November 7, but a canning season of this length is rare. He considers the condition condi-tion this year most unfortunate for the reason that there is a decided shortage of canned tomatoes, and also pens, throughout the United States. In the thirty-five days that the factories have already been in operation It would have been possible under favorable conditions to put up a 100 per cent pack, according to Mr. Parker. |
