Show LOCAL BANKER'S SOI ' DIES I .PORTLAND Willis S. McCornick Sue-, cumbs to Protracted Spell of Illness. Following a protracted illness, Willis P. McCornick. son of Mr. and Mrs. W. S. ( McCornick of this c:ty. died yes'erday afternoon at 4:10 at Portland. Ore. Mr. McCornick was born in Salt like in 1S7. During his junior year at liar- vard at the' outbreak of the Spanish- American war he discontinued hie siudies to enlist with the Roosevelt Rough Riders, and saw active service in Cuba, receiving tiie commendation of ins superior officer for heroism displayed at the battle of San Juan hill. At the close of hostilities hostili-ties he resumed his studies at Harvard, graduating with high botiois from that well-known institution in Rm. j The three ensuing years were spent by Mr. MeCorntck in Siberia in the development develop-ment of mining properties, -where lie acquired ac-quired a knowledge of the Russian and other languages which fitted him in after years as a linguist of ability. Returning to this country, he engaged in the broker-a broker-a ge business in this city, founding the firm of McCornick & Matthews, which later developed into tiie firm of McCornick McCor-nick Brothers. Four years ago he suffered suf-fered a nervous breakdown, the result of too close application to business. Since then be had been in constant search of health without success. Mr. McCornick possessed a happy faculty fac-ulty of making friends, ascriba ble to his sunny disposition and personal magnetism. He was unmarried and is survived by the parents, three sisters, Mrs. A. H. S. Bird, Miss Anna McCornick and Mrs. R. W. Salisbury, and four brothers, Henry A. McCornick of Twin Kails, Clarence K. McCornick of New York, Lewis B. McCornick Mc-Cornick and Albert V. McCornick of Salt Lake. The body will be brought to this city and notice of the funeral will be an-: an-: nounced later. |
