Show OAKS SPRING SURPRISE BY WINNING ONE Take Forenoon Contest and Break Own Losing Streak as Well as Tigers' Winning Win-ning Habit. Special to The Tribune. IOS ANGELES, Sept. 3. A peculiar surprise startled the baseball fans here today. Oakland really won a ball game from Vernon. Very few saw the Oakland Oak-land victory, as it was in the forenoon game the visiting team won. The game was played away out at Vernon, but in the afternoon Manager Ham Patterson admitted the defeat with bowed head. The Oaks lost again in the afternoon, so the city Is tranquil again. The scores were, in the forenoon, Oakland Oak-land 5, Vernon 1'; in the afternoon, Vernon Ver-non 2, Oakland 1. The morning game was won at the expense ex-pense of Art From me. He was wild, and hit hard. The victory was a genuine one on Oakland's part. From me was relieved by Chief Johnson in the sixth with four runs chalked against the former Giant. Johnson also allowed a run. He was finally yanked for a pinch hitter In the seventh and Jack Quinn finished the game. The afternoon game was a pitchers' battle between Bill Burns and Roy Mitchell. The Tigers scored in the first and fifth innings. The only Oakland run was made in the ninth, when a rally was started. Herser doubled and went to third on Rube Gardner's single and scored on Del Howard's sacrifice fly to left field. All efforts to score another run failed. Forenoon game: OAKLAND. AB. R. H. PO. A. E.
