Show CONGRESS TO ADJOURN. 'ongress is goi ng to (pi it this week for sure. Tiiat is to say it is the present intention of the senators to pass the revenue measure and what is known as the Webb bill and 1 't it go at that. Thursday is the day talked about for the adjournment of the session ses-sion among the leaders of the majority party in the upper chamber, and there will be no opposition in the house, the members of which have been anxious to get through and go homo for a long time. Now that the end is actual-lv actual-lv in sight a few days more or less does not mak" much difference to the business intercuts and the vast, body of people, who make up the populat ion of the Tinted States, but thev will sigh with relief when the gavHs fall in both senate and house and the members wend their way back to iheir home states to render an nci-ount of their stewardship before the voters get a d.ance at the;,, n the polls. Some of them, thrw who aro not compelled to run the L'a tint let in So- emb( r, may make a flying trip up to Maine, but as the fine Tree state election occurs one we'-k from tomorrow tomor-row very little time will remain for !he statesmen to saw the air and make extravagant claims as to what the present pres-ent conL'ress lias done and what the n".t congress will do before I he Maine rlertors march up to the polls and give predion to their' political convictions convic-tions 'Che Ih-nm.TMs claim the re-P"ft re-P"ft fiom ti.eir parly leaders on the .j,ai-.- of winning the Maine elc-lion am a-touH.iug, ' ' while the. Repub licans arc confident of au oldtime Republican Re-publican victory and a majority that will point the way to the states that do not vote until November. There will doubtless be a few more speeches on the revenue bill before the senators take a vote, but there does not seem to be any doubt, as to its adoption. There may alr-o be some remarks re-marks on the Webb bill, but no serious opposition to the measure is expected to develop owing to the fact that it will enable the man u fad urers of the United States to compete on even terms wilh the manufacturers of other nations in the foreign field of trade. With these two measures enacted into law it is the purpose of the Democratic leaders to throw the immigration and corrupt practices bills overboard and adjourn. So mete it be. |
