The terrific German Ger-man bombardment of the Preuch positions posi-tions around hill 301 has been greatly intensified during the last twenty-four hours, according to reports from Paris. The German statement simply says that in the Meuse district "the artillery activity has increased to great violence," vio-lence," but tonight's report from Paris says that not only are the Germans hammering ham-mering steadily against the French first line around this important height, but the French second line in the region of Chattancourt has been brought under the German fire. The Paris report chronicles a French attack against the German positions north of hill 321, in which several sections sec-tions of a trench were taken and about thirty prisoners brought back. On this, the east side of the river, the German artillery fire also has been directed violently vio-lently against the French batteries south of Port Vaux. The reply of the French guns has been equally energetic. FRENCH TROOPS DASH FORWARD AND TAKE PRISONERS PARIS, June 17r 10:35 p. m. The official of-ficial communication issued tonight by the war office reads: On the left bank of the Meuse the bombardment continued against our first lines on hill No. 304 and our second lines in the region of Chat-tancourt. On the right bank an attack by our troops against the German positions po-sitions north of hill No. 321 enabled us this morning to take some elements ele-ments of trenches and capture about thirty prisoners. During the clay there was a violent artillery action ac-tion in the sector south of Fort Vaux. In the forest of Apremont,. grenade gre-nade fighting occurred. Our artillery artil-lery bombarded German camps and organizations at Montsec, east of St. Mihiel. One of our long range guns slilled a station at , Vigneulles-les-Hattonehatel, where a fire broke out. Aviation: Barle-Duc was bombarded bom-barded anew. The bombs dropped caused damage of little military importance. im-portance. Several persons are reported re-ported wounded.
