Show CALIFORNIA. SAN FRANCISCO, Nov. 0. California politicians settled down tonight to pre- pare for a vigilant surveillance of the ; semi-official count of the state by county j i lorks and the final count by the secretary of state. All future proceedings, leaders i of both parties agree-, will hinge upon , what develops in these counts. At 6, o'clock tonight Wilson led the state by 32St; votes. With eighteen precincts missing, the count stood: Hughes. 4i2,-RIK; 4i2,-RIK; Wilson, 466.090. Chester H. Rowell, chairman of the Re- ! publican state central committee, and O. K. Cushiny. chairman of the Democratic , I state central committee, were in accord I in that both agreed the outlying precincts still to be heard from would not make much difference one way or the other, in the- unofficial returns. They differed as to the official count, Mr. Gushing claiming claim-ing the state and Mr. Rowell expressing doubts and claiming a spilt delegation in , the electoral college. The California ; delegation was split, eleven to two, in 1912 j and was divided several times previously. , Tonight the Republicans expected to get three of the thirteen delegates and per- j haps more. Legal counsel has been retained by Re- i publicans and Democrats to aid In watching watch-ing the final counts. In addition, deputy United States marshals mar-shals and secret service men have been detailed in the large count ies, notably ! Alameda (Oakland) with, roughly, jno.OuO ! votes, and Los Angeles, with 250,000 votes, on the two big tickets. Tomorrow being a half holiday, the count by county clerks probably will start Monday and the final count in the ofilce of the secretary of state on Thursday. ; Perhaps by a week from tomorrow, the final official results may be known, i Complete prohibition in California was i defeated. A measure (amendment No. 2) comprising many restrictions on the :sale. possession and use of alcoholics appeared, ap-peared, on available, returns, to have lost, jits opponents, on the strength of a can-i can-i vass of the state today, claimed a majority ma-jority against it of 40.000. The Califor-1 Califor-1 nia Dry federation refused to concede 'this, charged fraud, ami claimed that an honest count would carry the measure through. No figures were available in support of this contention. .Returns from Incomplete precincts were obtained with extreme difficulty. A stage starting from the shores of Lake Tahoe with one missing preefnet was unable to proceed through the snow. The driver, G. Ij. Richardson, came through on snow-shoes snow-shoes to Placerville. which is the Hang-town Hang-town of Bret Harte's stories. Much of the way he traveled the old immigrant trail, over which the forty-niners came over the mountains and Into California. He arrived tonight. SAN FRANCISCO. Nov. 1 0.
