Show GRIFFIN'S DEFEAT IS SURPRISE DFTHE DAY Native Son Loses to Philadelphia Phila-delphia Contestant After Five Hard Sets. , BOSTON, July 28. Clarence J. Grlfrin of San Francisco, who won an unlooked-for unlooked-for victory over R. Norris Williams II of Cumnridse, former national tennis champion, cham-pion, in the early stages of the Lcngwood singles play, was himself the victim" of a sensational upset in the fourth round of the tournament today. Griffin was defeated de-feated by J. J. Armstrong of Philadelphia in five sets. 6-3, 3-li. 6-3, 5-7, 6-4. Armstrong's Arm-strong's well-rounded game was more than a natch for the Callfornian's smash-ins smash-ins tactics, and the Philadelphian s well-placed well-placed drives repeatedly caught Griffin out of position. For the first time in the tournament, the gallery was able to get a line on the ability of I. Kumagae, the Japanese champion, cham-pion, who met his first hard opponent in N. W. Niles of this city. The Japanese won in five grueling sets, showing marvelous mar-velous court. covering ability, keen strategy strate-gy and execution and an ability to handle han-dle with the greatest ease the Boston man's tricky service. The scores were 6-4, 2-6, 6-4, 2-C, 6-3. Players Work Fast. $oth ''players were exhausted when the match ended, particularly Niles, who in the morning had finished a hard match against Richard Harte of Philadelphia, tile Harvard football and baseball star. Niles was unable to get his net game going, go-ing, Kumagae passing him often and driving him to the back court. At the back court game the Japanese champion was at his best and soon had Niles worn out. Kumagae will meet the winner of the match between A. Ingraham of Providence Provi-dence and C. S. Garland of Pittsburg. W. M. Johnston of San Francisco, the national champion, won an easy three-set match from Craig Piddle of Philadelphia, the Californian devoting the last set to practicing shots. A good match is expected tomorrow in the finals for the eastern doubles championship, cham-pionship, when T. R. Pell "of New York and R. Norris Williams II of Cambridge meet G. M. Church of Tenafly, N. J., and W K. Davis of' San Francisco. Williams today showed a return to his old form and teamed up well with Pell; but the Church-Davis combination is looked upon by many as the favorites. The Scores.
