Show STRONG MEN NEEDED. The open season for candidates will begin next month, and for a time there will be much pulling a nd hauling in states where selections have not alreadv been made. Once the state conventions are over the party factions will get together to-gether and the lines be sharply drawn as I between the Republicans and Democrats. iTlien the fireworks will be touched off. From all indications the presidential campaign will be one of the most strenuous stren-uous in the history of the country and 1 he mvni na lion of w-ak gubernatorial candidates in any of the states will a f . feet the result in the nation at 'urge. This is only tmc of th1 northern slates, j for the south "'ill continue to b found j in the Peeicrntic column in any event. J Therefore it behooves ach and everv j Repueb''an v-"ho h.is tlm welfare of his j party at heart to heln select such ran-; ran-; didate for state office- as will stand the acid t"st at the rolls. So fai as the political news from the eastern states is concerned, public sentiment senti-ment appears to be running stronlv in favor of Air. Hughes, but the election I does not take place until November. The I).-mociats are well entrenched in the public offices, and thus possess great natural advantages at the outset of a political campaign. We may be sure that nuihing will be left undone by the administration to perpetuate itself in power and that every move made from now until election day will be for the single purpose of strengthening the political po-litical position of Mr. Wilson. The Democrats have control of both branches of congress, ami that leverage will also be used to the fullest extent. We believe, be-lieve, however, that Mr. Hughes is strong enough to break the combination and lead the Republican party to a great victory, provided he is not weighted down with state tickets that no man on earth could carry and achieve success. The nomination of Judge Folger for governor of New York paved the way for ' Cleveland 's election to the presidency presi-dency and gave tn Democrats their first opportunity to sweep the country since 'the Civil war. Folger was a good man ana would undoubtedly have been a good governor, but he was the candidate candi-date of a faction and the New York Republicans smote the .ticket at the polls and the Cleveland regime resulted. There is a lesson in this that should be heeded. |
