Show EVANS ELIMINATED IN RACE F0RG0LF TITLE Ned Sawyer Gets Revenge for Double Beating; Standish Wins Hard-fought Struggle From Fownes. By International News Service.-. DKTROIT. Aug. 31. When Ned Sawyer defeated Chick Evans today, he got his revenge for two Beatings taken in the western championships by eliminating his fellow Chicagoan from the national golf title race. Evans was put out of the race after thirty-one holes of buttling, and did not give up till he had failed to hole a fifty-foot putt on the thirteenth in the afternoon, when a difficult three alone stood between him and defeat. The Evans-Sawyer match drew the most interest, hut the hardest-fought struggle was between Jimmy Standish of Detroit. Michigan champion, and W. C. Fownes of Pittsburg, former ns tlonrU champion. This went thirty-seven holes before Standisli won out, Fownes having squared the match after being three down on the first eighteen holes. Three Delroiters Qualify. With the state champion Detroit qualified quali-fied three men. H. B. Dee heating E. B. Byers and J. B. Schlotman winning from C. Hi. Gardner. Only one De trotter, fell, Robert Gardner of Chicago putting out IoliIs Bredin, one i:p. Chicago lost Faul Hunter, who was beaten by Gardner White, and Albert Seokel, who was Sher-rill Sher-rill Sherman's victim. Only two Windy City men qualified.
