Show FdSI FIRES ARE LIKELY TO HAPPEN Period of Extreme Danger Approaches; Extra Care Is Necessary. Special to The Tribune. OGDKX, Aug. 13. According to reports re-ports received from supervisors in charge of the national forests under jurisdiction of the Fourth district office of-fice here, the period of extreme danger from forest fires is rapidly approaching. approach-ing. This is due to the absence of reasonably rea-sonably heavy precipitation. With hardly an exception, according to the reports from all parts of the district, hot, dry weather prevails, with little sign of rain for the immediate future. L'p to and including the week ended August 7 seventy-three fires were reported. re-ported. Sixty-one of these fires were discovered and ext inguished by forest officers in time to confine the burned-over burned-over areaS each to ten acres or less. The twelve fires which burned over areas in excess of ten acres occurred on lands covered with brush and grass, j where the high inflammability of the ground cover precluded the possibility of con fining the t'i res to smaller areas. So far this season no fires have gained sufficient headway to cause top fires, or fires which reach the branches of the trees, and losses from forest fires up to the present time this season iu the district in charge of the local officials are reported as practically practi-cally negligible. With the approach of the period of extreme fire danger, without indications indica-tions of rain, the situation is becoming exceedingly threatening and the forest supervisors are marshaling their forces for intensive fire patrol. Several instances in-stances of co-operation in fire fighting by public-spirited citi.ens have been reported by the supervisors, all of which is very gratifying to the local officials, since equally hearty en operation opera-tion on the part of campers, tourist?, etc., in care with campf i res, matches and tobacco would reduce thp number of fires annually by at least 50 per cent. |
