Attackers Are Not Only Defeated, but Lose Lone Line of Mountain Defenses. By ANDRE BEAUMONT. (Special cab! JSt Arrangemut -tih London Dally T!e?raph ard International "Nws Servlc. ) MILAN, Aug. 13. A bold attempt was recently made by the Austrlans to force one of the gates into Italy by the march of a small detachment over tha Yalfurva glacier and the Vioz paee at a height of about 2500 yards when they were driven back by Alpine troops. But a second attempt now has been made as described in the official bulletins. In this latter attack the Austrians were repulsed, although the assault was made at night and they evidently expected to enrpriae the Italians on guard. Not only did the Italian troops drive off the attackers, but in the consequent pursuit they established themselves in new positions at Forno, which belongs to the Ortler group, consisting of some sixty glaciers along a distance of about . I five miles. i Even if they had succeeded the Aus trians could not hope to derive any great advantage from such a movement, ! as the reconnaissance could not be fol- j lowed by the entry of any large masses of troops. This only proves that all the ' passes into Italy are well protected, j Progress of the Italian troops contin- i ues in the valleys of Ansiel and Vis-1 , dende in Cadore, where, the forward movement was begun more than a week i ao. In the latest skirmish forty of the Austrian Alpine troops were captured. |
