Show DOUGLAS FIR SOLD FOR RAILROAD TIES Oregon Short Line Obtains Timber From Idaho Na-; Na-; ; tional Forest. ; Special to The Tribune. OGDEX, Aug. 13. -C. G. Smith, assistant as-sistant district forester in charge of timber sales for the Fourth district, has returned to the local headquarters after a brief trip of inspection on the Idaho national forest. The first timber sales ot' any consequence that have ever beeu made from this forest were made during The past year, the material obtained be-in:: be-in:: Douglas fir for railroad ties. These ties were delivered to the Oregon Ore-gon Short Lino railroad at LaJxeport. Iost of the ties sold in this district by T ho. government heretofore have been odgepole pine ties, which are treated with a ?.nc chloride solution before be-iui: be-iui: placed in use. Owing to their density find durability Douglas fir ties ere not ' always treated before being used, ac cording to "Mr. Smith. Charles H. Kendall of the road engineering en-gineering department of the Fourth forest district has just returned from an inspection of the Warren wagon road on the Idaho national forest. This road is the onlv means of transportation into a large inland empire. The county is doing some work around Pnyette lake ; od this road and the forest, service has greatly improved the condition of the road within the forest boundarr over a J section of twenty miles. Considerably more work, however, will have to be done on the road before it can be traversed trav-ersed bv automobile. Mr. Kendall states that the Payette lake is a great summer resort and the 1 throe large camping gronnds are filled : with pleasure seekers. Frederick Uurg-; Uurg-; dorff maintains a resort some thirty-five miles from Lakeport, which is one of the most charming hot spring resorts in ; Idaho, and when made more easily ac-; ac-; eessible by improved roads will be frequented fre-quented bv more people. There is a revival of the mining industry in-dustry in the vicinity of Warren. The outlook is very encouraging for rapid development of this territory. |
