Show "JOHNNY SHILOH" RETIRES. ' ' J ohnny Clom rotires today, and the active list of the army loses its last officer of-ficer who fought in the civil war. As the war ended half a century ago, the fact that a man who participated iu many of the great battles is just now being retired for age is somewhat remarkable and worthy of more than passing notice. Clem was born August 13, 1851, at Newark, New-ark, Ohio, and began his military service before ho was ten years old, entering the volunteers as a drummer in May, IStil, but was not enlisted until 1SG3. Shortly after the death of his mother he offered his services to the Third Ohio infantry as a drummer, but was rejected, being then not ten years of age. He afterwards offered himself to the Twenty-second Michigan Volunteer infantry, but was again rejected. He determined, however, to cast his fortunes with the Twenty-second Michigan, and April, lSt2, found him beating the " long roll ' 1 before Shiloh. After that he was called Johnny Shiloh." He was enlisted as a musician in that regiment on May 1, 1803. At the battle of Chickamauga he laid aside the drum for the musket, the barrel bar-rel of which had been cut down ex presslv for his use. He was titen just past his twelfth year. As the day closed and the army retired to Chattanooga, his brigade was ordered to surrender by the enemy. "Johnny Shiloh" brought his sa wed-off gun to position and shot a Confederate Con-federate colonel, lieneral Ksecraus made him a sergeaut and he was attached to headquarters. He was captured, but held only sixty-three days, lie was wounded at the battle of Atlanta and in other engagements. He was mustered out on September 19, 1S54, and went to school. General Grant appointed him a cadet at AVest Point, but "Johnny Shiloh" failed in mathematics and literature. He was also too short and did not weigh enough. Grant then commissioned him as a second Jieutenant in the regular armv. He saw service in Porto Kico and the Philippines as chief quartermaster. "Johnny Shiloh" wa only a colonel when the time for him to retire arrived, but he will go on the retired list as a brigadier general on aecouut of his civil war record. |
