The killing today of throe .Mexicans near I Mercedes, Hidalgo county, Te.. and the cspturo of twenty-two of the bandits' i saddle- horses in the same vicinity led to the belief that at least one of the bands ', of Mexican raiders has been scattered. ; Details of today's fighting in which the three Mexicans were killed were not available here tonight, federal and state officials having adopted an attitude of . reticence. They refused to discuss the matter further than' to a nnounce that three Mexican bandits had been killed. Reports last night that several hundred hun-dred armed Mexicans were preparing to enter Texas from Mexico at a point ten j miles east of Brownsville failed of ma- j terialization and were declared today to have had no foundation. Excepting the fight in Hidalgo county, the situation in Cameron, Starr and Hidalgo Hi-dalgo counties apparentlv was quiet today. to-day. Early tonight a report, which later waa confirmed, reached here that Texas rangers ran-gers In Hidalgo county chased eight Mexicans Mex-icans who reached the Mexican side of the Rio Grande, and, sitting on the banks of that stream, invited the rangers to cross into Mexican territory, saying they were the leaders American officers were seeking. The rangers withdrew. It Is believed the Mexicans are part of the band which abandoned their horses earlier earl-ier in the day and took to the brush. A farmer in HidaJgo county was held up and robbed tonight by two Mexicans. Adjutant General Harry Hutchtns of Texas, who has been investigating- con- ditions, left Brownsville tonight for i Kinffsville. |
