This state lined up in the "dry" ; ranks with Washinrton and Oregon, when ' the senate of the thirteenth Idaho legis- 1 lature this afternoon passed Senate BiU Xo. 142 a nd sent it to Governor Moses Alexander for his signature. The chief executive is pjedpred by his message to the legislature to sign the act, for he recommended its passage In the strongest possible terms. ' The "wets" made their last and final stand in this state today, when, led by Senators Whltcomb of Lemhi, Eraser of Kootenai, Macbeth of Custer and Fitz ; of Boise, they made desperate but futile efforts to amend the house bill in committee com-mittee of the whole in the senate when the aet was a special order. Every amendment they offered was voted down. When the committee arose Its report was adopted on a. roll call by a vote of 2.5 to S. with two senators paired. The rules were suspended by a vote of 21 to 9. and the act placed on its final passage, passing by a voto of 24 to 6. i The senate floor, its galleries and every available space of standing room, as well as Its doors and windows, were packed with spectators when the senate went into committee of the whole to consider the house prohibition bill. When the bill was passed under suspension sus-pension an outburst of applause broke forth, drowning the president's voice, and the crowd swarmed onto the senate floor following adjournment, congratulating senators on the passage of the bill. That the prohibition senators had a close organization was evident immediately imme-diately after the senate started debate on 1 the measure. Elliott of Bonner opened 1 for the "drys," declaring the big moral Issue involved in the prohibition bill was above partisanship and meets the demand ! of the people. He was followed by Zuck ! of Twin Falls and Graham of Ada county, speaking for the measure. Eefore the de- ; bate had closed Ricks of Madison, Carter I of Washington, Rundy of X'ez Perce, and I others spoke in Its behalf. Whltcomb of; Leinhl led the fight against it.
