Show LEAGUE WILL FIGHT I PUBIS 1DID HOGS" I Appalling List of Accidents 03 Autos, Busses and Trains in July. TO BOYCOTT VEHICLES Order Also Signed Governing Traffic of the Air in French Capital. f BY GEORGE DUFRESNE. Special Cable to The Tribune. PARIS, Auk- 24. For the pedestrian Paris is undoubtedly the most dangerous danger-ous city In the world. To cross certain thoroughfares at cortain hours of the day is a perilous adventure, to be made with prayer and precaution. Such is the feeling of every Parisian a feeling feel-ing the justice of which is borne out by the statistics of street accidents for tne month of July. In that month 170 accidents were registered by tho prefecture pre-fecture of police. Private motor cars caused 69 accidents, 8 of which wore fataL Next in shameful eminence were tho tBjrieab6( to the account of which lie 61 accidentss of which 2 were fatal. Then come the motor busses, witlf 14 accidentst of which had fatal results. The trams were accountable ac-countable for the remaining 36, 6 of which were fatal. It seems probablo that the list, formidable as it is, is not exhaustive Thore are not a few accidents in which the wretched pedestrian, satisfied to esoape with Beveral bruises more or less serious, is conveyed to his or her home without the public authorities being any the wiser. In such a matter as this the authorities move slowly, so the suggestion that a league should be formed on private initiative against the "road hogs" of Paris streets has met with instant approbation. Several statutes of this "league against scorchers" scorch-ers" have already taken verbal shape. I give ono or two of the most important: im-portant: Object of League. The object of the league win bs to prevent accidents by compelling the drivers of all vehicles, especially motor cars, to respect pedestrians' right to walk and to live. To attain this end the league will give Its assistance- before the courtB to the victims of the speed mania, and will endeavor to obtain the largest larg-est possible damages for them and tho most severe penalties for the "scorchers." It will demand the suppression sup-pression of horns, trumpets .md such like, which terrify the pedestrian and gi-e the chauffeur the dangerous idea that he lias the right to go on his way If only he has given warning of his coming. Each week the league will publish a black list of the numbers of the vehicles which have been the cause of street accidents. It. will recommend recom-mend the public In general, and Its members In particular, to boycott each vehicle as far as possible, Vhether a league on these lines be formed or not, It seems certain that something must be done to deprive Paris of her dire pre-eminence ln accidents ac-cidents of the streets. Tet It would be unfair to lay all the blame at the doc of the chauffeurs. What pedestrian pedes-trian temporarily enthroned ln a speedy taxi does not forget his former low estate, and urge to reckless speed the driver of the modem Juggernaut? To Govern Air Traffic. The prefect of police has slgnfd an order fixing the conditions In which the miiiiaieriut u w. : r.r oi ix tuni,uii8 traffic of the air Is to be applied The text Is as follows: Article 1 Pilots of aeroplanes are forbidden for-bidden to land within the limits of the city of Paris. They are also forbidden to land In the communes of the department depart-ment of the Selna at less than BOO meter from the nearest buildings, except In th case of aerdromes authorized by the administration: ad-ministration: and at certain fixed hours. Article S enumerates the officials who aro charged with the duty of enforcing these regulations, each in his own province. prov-ince. The new regulation Is timely- I nave seen aeroplanes flying over crowded boulevards, and wondered how many hundred people would be killed If the machine came down. |
