Their presence hud a noticeable effect on business, and particularly on real estate, numerous iu qniriefl being received from them by dealers concerning values, and a strong disposition to investment was evident, many of the delegates agreeing that the prices of realty in Salt Luke are lower than in any other city of corresponding size in tho country. The TranamisBissippj Congress open? the day after tomorrow. Tuesday, August Au-gust 27th. There will undoubtedly bo a large attendance, and lively times in connection with the session. Announcement was mado yesterday morning that the Oregon Short Line is authorized by President Lovett of the Ilavriman system to expend $1,750,000 in Idaho tho present liscal year, a splendid splen-did programme of improvement. During tho week there were additional addi-tional assurances that the Moffat road would be put through from tho present terminus at Steamboat Springs to Salt Lake. The City Commission has granted to the Merchants' Power Company of Ogden a franchise to furnish light and power in this city. The week has been a good one in business circles, the bank clearances showing a gain of 14 per cent over those of the corresponding week last year. The merchants report retail buying for the sultry season about closed. Their fall stocks are already purchased, and the shipments are coming in. It has been a satisfactory week, with Special sales continued strongly. Keith-O'Brien and Auerbaohs will be in their new stores at State street and Third South by the middle of the coming week. Great preparations are making for brilliant bril-liant openings by these two immense concerns. Cash collections continue good, and cash sales are strong, with outstanding accounts getting smaller. Summer vacationists are returning to the city with their stimulation of trade. Building operations continue active, and good progress is making on all the larger structures, as well as upon dwellings dwel-lings of every kind. The weather for the week has been seasonably warm, with the crops pushing push-ing forward to maturity, a bumper yield being in sight everywhere. There is ateady growth of optimism to be found in Utah mining circles which is in keeping with the unprecedented unprece-dented ore production of tho State, although al-though there elill remains a regretful absence of Interest in the development of new prospects. Money is reported easing, and there is a tendency to believe be-lieve that tnere will be a material Increase In-crease of exploratory work in the hills during the coming winter. There is no question but what the attitude of the Washinrrton officials in the matter of locating and patenting mining claims has defroyed prospecting and retarded the financing of unpatented mining propositions throughout tho West. Stock market conditions have been very much improved, the lower priced Issues, coppers In particular, having" taken the lead in the East, and several new high, levels wero attained during the past week. Utah Copper, Ray Consolidated, Con-solidated, Chino, Anaconda, and North Butte were among the more active copper cop-per stocks, a movement that is considered consid-ered due on account of increased earn ings and the 6teady copper metal market. Local mining share conditions are unchanged. un-changed. Aside from a few limited number of supported stocks, the local board 1b neglected. The majority of tho stocks have refused to move for so many months that the public can see no logical reason for buying at this time. Tho public never really participates in anything but a rising market, and the local mining 6tock exchange must first experience something to move shares up ward before old customers or new will come into the market. Metal conditions havo been about the same. Copper holds very firm at 17 cents per pound, a considerable bnying movement for export having been reported re-ported at this price lately. Lead baa appreciated slightly marketwise, and increased ranges are predicted in the near future, while silver has been firm above 62 cents per ounce. Spelter has risen materially during the past few days, an encouraging item when it is recalled re-called that several Tin tic companies began be-gan their initial zinc ore shipments during the past few day. The general commercial agencies report re-port an exceedinglv encouraging gltua-in gltua-in all respects, the volume of transactions transac-tions being better than for years past. Crop prospects aro increasingly optimistic. opti-mistic. The principal Industries aro working to their full normal capacity and trade distribution is continually ex panding. As Dun says, "the problems now are not those of depression but of prosperity, and it is no longer a short age of orders but a capacity to supply demand, and in some eases consumer---offer premiums for prompt delivery.' A shortage of labor in the wheat fields and in some industries is reported. Railroads Rail-roads are buying supplier liberally and placing heavy advance orders, and there Is a prospect of a car shortage iu carrying carry-ing the traffic of the country, Merchants Mer-chants ax now disposed tc buy more freely for advance needs. As Bradstreet says, "expansion is the koynot.o of the trade situation." Buyers feel Inspired to lay in good supplies. This Is largely predicated upon the assured as-sured large crop yields. Collections improve im-prove and moncv is abundart. Live stock prices have attained the record in the Chicago market during the week $10.60 to $10.75 per hundred pounds. The Boston woo market reports good trade with values firm. Tho feeling in manv circles is more confident than for a. long time, money being abundant and rates low. The stock market is still a. weakness, but it in helpful in that, it represses speculation specula-tion and holds transactions to actual de mand. Ail In all, the trade of the year is certain to be noteworthy, in spite of politics, which interferes less the present pres-ent season with the progress of business than in any Presidential year for a long time past, |
