Show RED ID BLACK DAY SC1ESASUCCE$$ The' annual Bed and Black day of the Salt Lake high school was observed yesterday afternoon and evening. Tho exercises commenced at 2 o'clock in the afternoon, and a dunce was glvon in the evening. The afternoon exercises were held in tho gymnasium assembly and the dance was given in the gymnasium. gymna-sium. No more elaborate dance has ever been given at tho Salt Lako high school. Two hundred couples attended. Much of the credit for tho succoss oi the danco was given to the decorations committee, which consisted of Frank Shepherd, Fred Moreton and "Walter Gillespie. The chaperons wore Principal and Mrs. George A. Eaton, Vice Principal and Mrs. Ira D. Trnvis, Vice Principal and Mrs. L. M. Gillilan, Mr. and Mrs. S. V. Derrab, Mr. and Mrs. M. B. Jennings, Jen-nings, Miss Ella M. Dukes, Miss Jessie Maxwell, Miss Alice Kowe and Miss Mamie Moffot. The exercises in the afternoon were opened with a selection by the high school orchestra, under tho leadership of Professor L. P. Chrisleuscn. Walter Brooke, a graduate of tho high school in 1904, gave an interesting interest-ing talk on tne differences between tho present high school and the hfgh schools of the past. He also complimented the school on its class spirit and declared that fraternities havo caused many eastern high schools to lower their standards. The Girls' Glee club sang "Barcarole." "Barca-role." under the able leadership of Professor William A. Wetzell. The girls received much applause. Starr "Wardron, editor of "Red and Black, tho official school publication, talkod about the paper and the splendid splen-did support the students have given to it. Fred Moreton. adjutant of tho cadet bnttalion, gave a review oT the battalion battal-ion 's work since its organization in 1011. and what is expected of tho present pres-ent battalion. This year's battalion is the largest since military work was introduced in-troduced in the school. Chester Snow spoke on the work of the debating club of which he is president. presi-dent. Mias Sophia Hardy recited "Tho Other Wiso Man" and the Boys' Glee club sang "Ud and Away." Miss Drusilla Gaby ot tho class of 1912 gave a very interesting talk on the Importance of students working together togeth-er for the interests of tho school. The Girls' Athletic association of the high Ffhool was represented by Miss Vera Duvall. president. 8ho gave the history his-tory of the association and the present association. "Robert Collier, president of tho Boys' Athletic association, gave an interesting tnlft on tho work of the association and the success of the footbnll teams and othor athletic squads. Tie also presented pre-sented a book to the school in which will be kept tho records of clnss nth-Ictics. nth-Ictics. Grcighton King, tho disnblod football hero, presented the official picturo of the football team in behalf of the team. Tho orchestrn closed the exercises with a pleasing selection. |
