Lake belle, Miss Pearl Van Cotl, now. Mrs. Carl Herbert You Horstmann. At a recent fair given at Tho Hague the queen had oiTcrcd prizes for some exhibits of iuterest to women and children, and Mrs. Horst-maun Horst-maun won a gold modal and a decoration decora-tion of honor for the best exhibition of Japanese dolls, of which sbo had a considerable collection, to which ehe added for tbo fair. Mrs. Horstmann has planned a really American house which is now being built on the Horstmann estate just outside The Haguo, and it is said that the placo is to differ very widely as to arraugemeut. and convenience conven-ience from the homes of the Dutch people, peo-ple, picturesque and attractive as they are. WHAT a joy it is to see tho changes in styles of hair dressing. dress-ing. Time was only a short while ago too. when even the young girls had to have rals and switches ami false fronts in order to conform to the prevailing styles of hair dressing. Now one sees t.hom with hair in a loose braid confined con-fined in that most fetching stylo with cither a ribbon or a barrette at the nape of the neck. It is surprising how main of them have such quantities of gorgeous hair, too. At. the play the other evening in company with one older girl there were a full half dozen with loosely braided locks simply tied with ribbon, any one of whom might have been a splendid advertisement for a hair tonic. Nor are the simple Btyles confined to the young girls alone. Nearly everyone is discarding false hair, unless indeed it is badly needed. AiND still dwelling on those fetching fetch-ing extremes of fashion, has any one ever seen 'anything more bewitching bewitch-ing than tho tiny Tlack bridles the girls arc wearing fastened beneath their dimpled chins? Of course no one (in hor right mind) except a very young and ver attractive girl, could wear the things. They would, bo suggestive sugges-tive under any other circumstances otf a policeman's make-up. But surrounding surround-ing rounded, dimpled, peachy chins, they are positively fascinating. They are reminiscent of the days when bonnet bon-net strings were all the rago, and make ono recall the lines about ''Tying her bonnet strings under her chin, She tied a j'oung man's heart within." I COMMUNICATION ! Anent the recent controversy between Willard Mack and J. Frank Burko and Richard Vivian, relative to t)ic latter two actors leaving: tho Utah theatre stock company becauno of a suggested reduction reduc-tion In salary, Tho Tribune yesterday received re-ceived tho following: letter from IWr. Burke: In reply to "Willard Mack's article In tho September :12 edition oC The ,, Trlbuno, I wish to state Mr. Mack is mistaken when he aay I was brought to tho Utafi theatre from the Colonial by means of a raise In salary. sal-ary. I went to the Utah theatre for oxnetly the same salary T got at the Colonial from Mr. Kelly, and exactly exact-ly the same salary that Mr. Mack himself brought mo from Portland to tho Colonlnl for thirteen months ago. It Is true Mr. Mack reduced salaries last fall Just previous to his closing of tho Colonial. I received only two weeks of the reduced salary when Mr. John Cort assumed charge of the theatre, installing Catherine Countlss and Wilfred Rogers in place of Mr. Mack and Miss Rambeau. My salary that I originally came to Salt Lake for was then reinstated and remained tho same during my engagement with William J. Kelley, and I came to tho Utah for exactly the same figure. I did not leave Mr. Mack's company com-pany because the salary he offered was not consistent with living expenses, ex-penses, nor have T cver made a statement state-ment to that effect. I left because I objected to the principle of reducing my salary $10 per week from . my original ealary, after thirteen months' service. Nor do I consider the original salary sal-ary fancy when tone takes Into consideration con-sideration it was less than one-third of what I understand some of the salaries paid at the Utah were. I would thank j'ou to publish this In Justice lo myself and that tho few friends T have In Salt Iake may see me In the right light. T have naught but. the best of feeling for Mr. Mack and consider both .him and his charming wife extremely clever artists, ar-tists, but T do want the truth In this matter. Yours respect fully.
