Show I DEADLY TORPEDO HAS WIDE RANGE Japanese Vessel Is Loaded With New Type of Destructive Agent. LO.VDON, Sept. 20. The new Japanese 1altli cruiser Kongo, which lias just nailed from Plymouth for home, 1b taltlng with her forty torpedoeB of a new and secret design. These torpedoes, a twenty-onc-inch weapon officially known as the V. L.. are as reat an Improvement upon the British admiralty's Hardcastle weapon weap-on as that torpedo was upon Its cold-air predecessors. Both are propelled by heated air; but while the Hardcastle had a range of S000 yards, the V. L. can travel from 10,000 to 12,000 yards at a speed of forty-eight knots. The trials of the Japaneso order were made under the personal supervision of two officers of the Kongo, and the tests vcre carried on with the greatest secrecy. se-crecy. They are said to have been highly high-ly satisfactory. In a few weeks the company manufacturing manufac-turing this new weapon will begin work on a lurgo order for delivery to the Ignited States navy. |
