Cheat, expanded, 431- eXPa2de ' Pp - F As the time draws near for the finish fin-ish wrestlincr match between Mike Yokel Yo-kel and Julius Johnson for the western middlewcicht championship, interest in the contest is becoming intense. . All indications point to a brilliant match and a record crowd when the men go to the mat at tho Salt Lake theater Tuesday eveninc. Both Yokel nnd Johnson will arrive in Salt Lake tomorrow morning. Yo. kel will come from Mb training camp at Ocderi. where he has been working out with Jack Harbertson and Ferguson. Fergu-son. He declares that he is in the best of condition and ready, to do his best. Johnson is now on his way from his training camp in the mountains eighty miles from Vernal. "Reports from the Johnson camp have been meager, but from what little can be learned the Norwegian is in great form and prepared pre-pared to spring a surprise on the local wrestling fans. i For, almost a month he has been training in the mountains and is as fast and strong as a Hon. Ho has also, been developing pome new holds which ho expects to use in Tuesday's Tues-day's contest and reports are to the effect that he intends, to foroe matters from the very start of the bout instead of allowing the contest to drag along until it becomes, a question of endurance. endur-ance. Yokel always plays a waiting game, but this tinie his friends say tha.t he is going after Johnson in an effort .to beat the Norwegian "quickjjy and- decisive. I'h'ere is intense bitterness- between the men and. neither will, overlook an opportunity to damage the other whether wheth-er the bont lasts five minutes or five hours. & The question of a Teferoe, is the only matter of importance yet to be decided. The wrestlers havo until tomorrow to; agree upon an officjal. So far neither hap signified a phoice. They will get together tomorrow., morning and talk over the matter. If they can agree, the man selected by them 'will, .ofnejate. If the wrestlers fail to agree Harry TV. Heagren, who is promoting the contest, will call upon the sporting writers of he four daily newspapers to name an official and their selection will -be final. There can "be no serious hitch in the matter as every contingency ia provided pro-vided for in the articles of agreement., The question of weight will not causa anj trouble. Johnson, the larger of tho two men, was down to 1f50 pounds a week ago and strong nt that weight. He will weigh about 159 pounds when he arrives tomorrow and on Tuesday Tues-day wiJI do just enough road work to reduce his weight to the required 15S pounds before tho time to weigh in. Yokel is well below the 158-pound rajfe-k. Three da3's ago ho weighed but lffw pounds and since then has taken off another pound or two. He expects to go on the mat weighing about 155 pounds, which ia his beBt wrestling weight. Heagren is arranging a classy card of preliminaries. They will bo three in number and will consume not more than one hour. This moans that tho main event will bo started not later than 0:15 o'clock, which will be pleasing pleas-ing news to the fans, many of whom look for n match lasting as long ot longer than the Yokel-Gehring bont. which took up1 throe hours and thirtv-eight thirtv-eight minutes of actual wrestling time. Because of ftho bitterness botweeu the two wrestlers and to better provide pro-vide for the safety of the contestants and the spectators, a roped arena will be erected on the stage so that neither of the men can rush the other into the stage seats or over the footlights and off the stage. The ropes wll not interfere in-terfere with the view' of the spectators. specta-tors. That one of the largest crowds which has ever witnessed a wrestling bout in Salt Lake will be present is a certainty. Already the demand for reserved seats has been the heaviest in the history of the game here, although the seat salo does not o.pen until tomorrow morning morn-ing whqn the coveted pasteboards will be placed on sale at the Salt, Lake theater. the-ater. , . j There has' been practically no bet-j bet-j ting on the result of tho contest. This iB due almost entirely to a desire on the part of the followers 'of. both nen to get a look at their respective favor', ites before wagering any coin. Both wrestlers have been absent from; Salt Lake for most of the time for tho past two months. Tomorrow it is expected that each will havo a light workout at Bean's San-G3'm gmnnsium. On Tuesday it is Jikely that both will do n little road work to keep limbered up A word ns to the stylo of the two men. Yokel is ono of the strongest, earnest and cleanest niiddleweights the wrestling game has ever known. H has met and defeated the great majority major-ity of thn men he has met, including many hoavywoights. Ho got his start here in Salt Lake and for years has been t)e Greatest favorite local sporting, sport-ing, circles have ever known. This has boon due not only to his great ability as a wrestler but nlso on account of his absolute, honesty and intensity of purpose when ho lroqs on the mat. Mike has never been a sensational or 'spectacular wrestler. He goes on the mat determined to do his best and is always willing to wait until ho gots his chance. Ho seldom hurries matters but will nor. back up when an oppo nent forces tho coing. Ho is fast and clever on I ho aggressive and his groat strength gives him an advantage, ovor most of the men at his weight. Oh the defensive he is f,ho eaual of any man in tho game today. Ho can curl himself him-self up into a ball and defy men almost twice his weight to got a d&ngerous hold on him. But always, ovory min ute of a contest, ho is striving to win. Jphnson is of a different typo than Yokel. Ho. is taller, more rangv and crafty. He seeks to accomplish by speed and trickery what Yokol strives for through strength and endurance. Jphnson is a master at tho wrestling game. Although a trifle younger than Yokel, he is mora experienced. Ho has won several tournaments in which ho has had to meet many men. Ho knows every trick of the wrestling game and in addition to this is an adopt at the Japanese game of .ihv.iit.su with all of its ounishing holds. The toe hold is Johnson's favorite method of defeating an opponent. He has used his hold on many heavyweights heavy-weights nftcr tossing them to the mat with tho "flying mare," the hold which Frank Gotch U6cd when he throw Zbyszko in six rounds. Johnson has worked with many of tho loading wrestlers of the world and from them he has acquirod a knowledge of the game which 'makes him dangerous at every stage of a contest. This will bo Mike Yokel's first ap-pearance ap-pearance in a finish mntch here for almost al-most a year. His friends, and thov are legion, will be on hand to cheer him to Victory, Also, there will be present hundreds of fans who firmly believe that in Johnson, Yokel is troinff to inoet the best man he has ever tackled and that he has an even chance of being returned re-turned tho loser when the bout comes to an ond. |
