Show SEVERAL OMAHA FIRMS PUT OUT OF BUSINESS OMAHA. Nob., April J3. The fire which, early this morning swept away one of tho principal business blocks in the. retail section of the city, caused a loss of probably $350,000. and put 'out of business several important retail concerns. Two of tho largest banks of the city were at one time threatened threat-ened with destruction and onlv extraordinary extraor-dinary effort b on tho part o? the fire department, tho entiro force of which, including the day shift, had responded to a general alarm, prevented a much larger loss. The fire was the most spectacular scene in the city for years and at one time, when a large stock of fireworks began t o explode, nearly caused a. street panic among tho thousands who had gathered to see the conflagration. Manager Harmon of the McCraiy company's 5 and 10-cent store, was dangerously cut by flying glass when he rushed into the store and secured $1100 in currency which was protected only by a cash register. Ton different concerns had stocks in the building. The building is located at Sixteenth and Parnam streets and was valued at $100,000. The stocks of the tenants, worth probably $200,-000 $200,-000 to $300,000, wero destroyed. |
