Show ARBOR DAY TOMORROW. Tomorrow will be Arbor Day, when 1 evorvono will join not only in setting i out troes, but- in brightening up the 1 city and giviiic it its spring cleansing. Tho Civir Improvemct League makos Jjood suggestions with regard to this Arbor Ar-bor Day observance, and the Department Depart-ment of Parks of Salt Uiko City is ready to civc information about tree planting, disinfection, and tho proper euro of the trees set out. All this is cood. and the expert in format ion so furnished should bo helpful lo the people peo-ple in their Arbor Day campaign, While eonstderinc tins question, we wish to renew the suggestion which we have mode heretofore on "occasions like this, that tho trees nhouhl not oufy be set out. but should bo cared for throughout tho season, so that the tree ffrowth of the valley should be materially ma-terially incroased yenr by year. It would probably be a good idea if the Arbor Day law were amended ao as to provide for roports of the troes planted, plant-ed, and a year later of the number of trees so planted that still survive. Tt iB evidently a waste of lime and effort to plant troes if they aro not cared for and the tree growth materially increased. in-creased. Without that, it is idle to take the trouble of planting trees. Let uh have the trees not only planted, but cared for and roared, so that wo shall have them in their full .growth. Amendment of the law is probably necessary in order to achieve tho best results and enable us to know bow wo are gettinc on with tho foresting of this region. Unless wo can gain on this, it is idlo to mako so much ado year af),er year in the plantine of trees Let; us have this matter brought down to a practical basis, and know where we are at every year in foresting, or else drop the matter altogether. But of course no one wants to drop tho matter. Therefore, tho nucessary thing lo do is to amend the law so that we shall not ouly plant trees but caro for them until they mature, and keep the record by reports made year by year of how we .are getting along in foresting. |
