Show ADMITS IT ITSELF. In the affected name of fairness and, decency the church organ continues to be most unfair and indecent in its treatment of Ihc report of the Smoot remark at the launching of tho Utah. Wherever that, organ can pick up a newspaper or hears anything said in regard to tho matter, it promptly howls that the thing was a Tribune fake, falsely sprung on tho public by i his paper, and all that sort of thing. As a matter of fact, it whs simply a news dispatch which we received from Washington, having no idea whatever that it would be denied. Later it turned out to be a story printed in the Washington Post, was doubtless obtained ob-tained by our correspondent from that paper, and yet. tho News has nothing lo say about the Washington Post. It is always a Tribune fake, a Tribune lie. and The Tribune is dragged in for abuse and misrepresentation on account of it. As a matter of fact, there is. no reason why such a report should hrfvc arisen if it had not been true; and we sliJI believe that, it was true. Of course we care nothing about' all this church organ vilification, because be-cause it is quite in the lino of the church organ's usual deceptive and mendacious outgivings, especially when this papcr or the American party is under consideration. We accepted the story ns a news telegram, and used it ns such. Wo had no idea that il would ever be denied any more than a hundred other news items that come to the desk ever' night. Wo judge, however, that the News knows thcro was some truth in the story, or that it wouldn't. ko.ep up this vindictivo warfare war-fare about it, alleging that it was. something The Trihnno cooked up against. Smoot. At the same time, it virtually reaffirms re-affirms Smoot 's idea of the happy coincidence, saying (hat il "was a coincidence vco much pleasing to the members of Ihc Mormon church." Well, that is protty near I what Smoot said, and Tho Tribune didn't originate that, cither. It came direct from last night's Dcscref. News's dishonest outcry against Tho Tribune for quoting Smoot as saying practically the same thing. Isn't it about timo for the News to stop its idiotic chatter about this? " When it comes to the point that, in an editorial it will say practically practi-cally the same thing that Smoot did what is the basis for further contci tion ? |
