Show IDAHO WANTS $75,000 Ofl LAND SALES MADE Gov. James U. Brady Intends to Call on U. S. for . the Money. Special to Tho Tribune. BOISE, Ida.. March 13, Tho state of Idaho I3 entitled to the fortune of 575,-000 575,-000 from tho government for the salo of public lands, and Governor James 11. Brady has signified his Intention of calling call-ing upon tho federal authorities to forward for-ward that amount, or the propor legal action will bo taJcon to recover it. Idaho's chief oxccutlvo has written to tho congressional con-gressional delegation of this stalo at Washington, calling attention to tho fuel that Idaho failed to receive Its share of tho procecdn of sales of public lands for several years Immediately following admission ad-mission Into tho union. The first payment was made to tho state by the government on a 5 per cent basis in tho year 1S00. The back pay, as If Is referred lo. Is now claimed by the state as running from 1890 to 18D9. Through the passago of an act of congress, con-gress, when tho national debt was about six millions of dollars, and In the hopes of liquidating this amount, provision was miulc for tho sale of public lands In tho different states and territories, 5 per cent of tho proceeds of tho sale to be used for roads and canals within the limits of the states wherein tho lands were sold, while tho remaining per cent wius lo apply on thu national debt. Idaho, like other states, has legislated to provide that but 5 per cent of thu proceeds of such sales should -bo placed In the permanent fund, of which only the Interest should be used for common schools within tho limits of tho state. However, Idaho fallod to ro-celvo ro-celvo Its percentage from these sales until un-til 1890, and now tho state demansd reimbursement. re-imbursement. Speaking of tho attitude the state Is to assume In demanding payment. Governor Brady said: "I find that the record In tho state treasurer's offlco discloses the fact that the first money was received on account of this 5 per cent of the not proceeds of sales of public lands In the state on November No-vember 0, 1809, In tho amount of $1738.51-, on April 12, 1900. the stato received re-ceived $3054. -Ifi; on May 16 of tho samo year, $680; In 1901. April 11. S5233.1Ii; and tho record further discloses that a certain cer-tain amount, alleged to represent o per cent, has been received each year by tho state treasury. It Is therefore to bo supposed sup-posed that $1738.51 represents all the moncv which the United States turned over to Idaho as Its proportion of these sales from the date of tho admission of Idaho as a state up to tho year 1399. "Tho provisions In tho Idaho administration adminis-tration bill, to which I refer, read as follows: " 'Section 7. That 5 per cent of the proceeds of tho sales of public lands lying within the state, of which shall bo sold by tho United States subsequent to the admission of said state Into tho union, after deducting all the expenses Incident Inci-dent to the same, shall bo paid to the said state to be used as a permanent fund, tho Interest of which only shall be expended for the support of the common schools within Eald statc. "If It Is true, as represented, that Idaho Is being deprived unjustly of this large sum of money which Is rightfully due her by tho reason of the provisions of tho admission bill, I know full well that representatives rep-resentatives of Idaho In congress will exert every effort to see that the stale'3 right Is protected." |
