Show I TO STRENGTHEN DEFENSES OP HAWAIIAN ISLANDS WASHINGTON, April 17. By th establishment, of the artillerv district of tho department of California, designated desig-nated as tho district ' of Honolulu, about .Inly 13, Hawaii's dofensea will be greatly strengthened. Ma.i. John K. Cree, now at Fort Preble. Pre-ble. Me., was today ordered to the Presidio Pre-sidio of Snn Francisco, to assume, command com-mand of coast artillery troops under orders to proceed to Honolulu. It is the intention of the war department to send only two companies of tho coast artillery to Fort Auger, Hawaii, at this lime, but provision is being mado for a four-conipanj' garrison. Maj. Cree. with his troops, will sail from San Francisco about -Tuly fj. "When the present plans of the war de- ! jiartment have been carried out the do- 1 k fenses of Honolulu will be manned bv forty-five officers and 1056 men of the coast artillery corps. There will be seventeen mortars, six 12-inch guns and seven 3-inch guns in the batteries. |
