DIRECTORS RECEIVE ENCOURAGING REPORTS Club Will Ask That Officers Be Stationed Along Main Streets for Protection. The "good roads" movement received re-ceived another big boost nt tho meeting meet-ing of the board of di rectors of tho Salt Lako automobilo club, hold Thursday afternoon, and tho various reports read showed that improvements in tho roads and boulevards of Snlh Lako and. the neighboring cities were being carried on to a wonderful extent. Tho late 'good roads" mass meetings held in Ogdeu and American Fork scorn to havo brought tho movement right lo the frout in thoso cities just tho samo as in Salt Lake, and it is not improbablo that within tho next year Utah will bo ablo to boast of having somo of the best driveways of any State in tho country. Another important subject discussed Thursdav afternoon Avas that of drawing draw-ing up a set of regulations pertaining to the speed limit of automobiles, and it was decided to prepare a bill relativo to this question to no presented to tho next State legislature. The board also decided lo take ollicial action against parties in tho outskirts of tho cit', especially, es-pecially, who make it a practice to throw tin cans, rotten fruit and other rubbish at passing automobiles, and swear out warrants against such persons. per-sons. This is becoming a common practice, prac-tice, it is said, and the board is determined deter-mined to put a stop to it. A resolution was unanimously adopted, adopt-ed, in which it is proposed to ask the city to station olliccrs along the main streets of the. city both to enforce the speed limit and also to compel pedestrians pedes-trians to keep to tho sidewalks and thus avoid numerous unnecessary accidents. The board maintains that while many of the accidents are duo to reckless driving, dozens of others are simply duo to carelessness on tho part of pedestrians, pedes-trians, and in lots of cases it is unfair to hold tho chauffeur responsible. Several new members were received into active membershin,, and tho resignation resig-nation of E. W. Macarton, assistant secretary sec-retary of tho organization, was read and "accepted. Owing to Charles A. Quiglev being out of tho city, there was only four members of the board present. pres-ent. President O. II. Hewlett, C. Ti. Pearsall, L. L. Perry and James E. Jennings. |
