I STATEV EHTS CONFLICT AS TO illS CASE Interest Still Centers Around Alleged Confession of Wife of the Defendant. XEW YORK, Aug. 20. Interest in the caso of tho llains brothers, now awaiting indictment and trial in tho Queen's county jail for tho murder of. William T. Anuis on the float of the Bayside, Long Island, Yacht club last Saturday, centers today in various contradictory con-tradictory statements issued by tho lnw-ycrs lnw-ycrs for' Captain Peter Uains and his brother, Thornton J. Hains, and by thoBO having in chnrgo the interests ot Mrsj JIains, tho captain's wife. Frank G. Wild, Mrs Uains' attorney, insisted that signed confessions to tho contrary notwithstanding, Mrs. Vilnius had never boon guilty of improper conduct con-duct with Annis. Mr. Wild denied a published story that Mrs. llains was trying, to effect a reconciliation with her husband nnd would testify in his behalf at tho trial. Tolls of Auto Ride. Wcldon C. Fcrcy, tho first lawyer called in to defend Captain llains and his brother, refused to comment on tho various statements. In respect to the much exploited incident of the automobile automo-bile ride, in which Captain Uains took Annis after his return from the Philippines, Philip-pines, however, Mr. Percy threw a new light.
