Gardner, Gard-ner, In an Interview credited to her by a morning newspaper, neknowlodKOd her ownership of tho art poods which have been seized by customs officials in Chicago, Chi-cago, because of having been brought Into this country by Mrs. Emily H. C. Chad-bourne Chad-bourne under an alleged false declaration, in which, tho goods were described as "household .effects," but declares she did not know of Mrs. Chadbournc's intention to bring them to this country. Tho statement attributed to Mrs. Gardner Gard-ner Is. In part, as follows- "The customs department has always persecuted me. and 1 have paid thousands of dollars of duty upon objects of art as a result of their Impositions. Tho goods In Chicago belong to me. I had loaned them to Mrs. Chudhourno for her home in Ku-rope. Ku-rope. I doubt If the articles would total $60,000 in value, and I think Mrs. Chad-bourno Chad-bourno had a perfect right to bring them Into this country as 'household goods.' "I don't know whether tjie $70,000 In fines and penalties was paid by mo or not, as I havi a man who looks after such things. I have not piild $S0.000 to keep the art objects from being sold at auction. If tho duty Is paid In full and a still bigger lino Is paid without protest, I don't see why the customs people should take tho articles, too." |
