Show THE PLOT AGAINST TUB OITY. Stung to desperation by the resentment resent-ment of the people of this city against tho church Republican plot to steal from this city its firo aud polico departments, de-partments, and tho muuicipal property appertaining to l.hom, tho disreputable organ of that party makes -windier threats. Its new menace is uot only that these departments are to bo stolen, but "tho "whole city government will bo taken away." Aivl, the disreputable organ idiotically chuckles, "That will bo tho eud of the American part'. " That is, the local self-govorumcnt oF this city is to be taken from the pcoplo here, and this b3r means of tho commission com-mission system such as is in oporation at Galveston aud Dcs Moines. But in thoso cities, tho people elect tho commission. com-mission. It must be. then, that the "Republican" scheme is for the adoption adop-tion of the commission tlau of city government for Salt Lake, -with the commission selected in some other way than by the voters of tho city, perhaps by tho Governor. But this would bo such an unropublican and undemocratic a proposition, bo repulsive to tho American Amer-ican idea of government by the people, that wo could not imagino for a moment mo-ment the success of such a political outrage. It would react so trcmcu-dousb trcmcu-dousb against, the perpetrators of it that we do not believe any political bosses, not even thoso of the pin-headed "Federal bunch," would, daro io hazard the popular wrath that would cusuc. Nor do we believe for one moment mo-ment that those Salt Lakers who have been advocaliug the Galveston or Des Moines commission plan of municipal government would stand for it in tho form of destroying tho popular voice in the selection of the commission. It is au insane idea altogether, born of tho frenzy of reseutment at the indignation indigna-tion -which has been aroused in this city by the proposition to steal from tho city its fire and police departments and the property used by them; that was paid for by the taxpayers of bait Lake. The more the scandalous plan- ot tho Republican part3 which pledges its legislative nominees to that theft is considered, the more odious it is seen to be.- The people hero tax themselves them-selves to build up these departments, and provide them with the facilities needed in their operation, and this at a cost, measured only by tens of thousands thou-sands Of dollars, and then comes along a political party and proposes, in violation vio-lation of the constitution, to take awny these departments, aud this propert', and turn them over to the State. Aud if the people here object to this robbery, rob-bery, then they are to have their rights, of local . self-government, taken awa3' from them altogether. -Nothing more indefensible and inexcusable in .public morals and from American ideas of popular rule, was ever proposed iu a" government of, by. and for tho peo-" pie. And it won't win. But it will utterly ut-terly damn those who propose it. |
