RING HAM JUNCTION, April 0 The United States Smelting company hns taken on new llfi since the decision handed down last Saturday by Judge Marshall. In place of bjjlng closed doy:i tight, as has been the case during the last two months. It now has a payroll of ISO men, most of whom are mechanics. me-chanics. In an interview Assistant Manager Rhodes yald a number of changes are to be made, and some time will elapse before the smelter will be In full wlng. Many of the present hand roasters arc to be replaced by new converter roasters, which are to be built at quite an expense. ex-pense. This new roaster Is tho result of many experiments during the last year. Additional brick flues are to be constructed to conduct the smoke and fumes from the roasters- into the bng-house, bng-house, which, in all probability, will have to be enlarged. As the ore bins arc empty and many of our old ore contracts have expired, It may take some time to close tho deals now ponding for various kinds of ore nnd lo replenish the bins. In the meantime mean-time construction work will go on and the work laid out as fast as the blueprints blue-prints are ready. Mr. Rhodes stated further that probably prob-ably an expenditure of $120,000 would havo to be made In order to handle thn poisonous gas problem, which he Is certain cer-tain can be handled to the advantngo rather than to the disadvantage of the farmers. , "We expect to have three or four of the lead blast furnaces going by July and be In full blngt by October, when about o00 men will be employed. The proposition of reopening the copper furnaces fur-naces will not receive much consideration considera-tion until after the lead smelter is under un-der good headway." |
