INTERESTING PAPERS UNDER DISCUSSION Arrangements Perfected for Elaborate Banquet ax Commercial Com-mercial Club Saturday. The second general meeting of the Western Association of Technical Chemists Chem-ists and Metallurgists is in session In Salt Uake, the meeting opening yesterday yester-day afternoon with a visit by tho delegates dele-gates to the metallurgical laboratory of the University of Utah. At the laboratory they wore received by several of the professors, who conducted the visitors about the place, the delegates expressing express-ing themselves gratified with the complete com-plete equipment and general interest, that is part of this portion of tho university. The evening business meetings are being be-ing held at the chemical laboratory, Unl-cr?Uyof Unl-cr?Uyof Ulan- At s o'clock last night. V - " rnphagen. president of the association, asso-ciation, gave a highly Interesting address on Tho Smelter Smoke Problem " This subject, which just at present Is attracting attract-ing so much attention, was ablv handled by Mr. Traphngen. who dealt with it In Its different aspects and gave some carefully care-fully thought out suggestions as to remedies reme-dies that, might be used. Not onlv was the paper read by Mr. Traphagen, but It was thoroughly discussed by all present. Mr. Traphagen cited the fact that in Montana, where he has conducted experiments experi-ments regarding the smoke prohlem, that that stock thrive and the best of crops are grown right under the shadow of the smelters. During these experiments arsenic was fed to cattle for a number of mon Lbs. when the stock was killed and microscopic examinations made for arsenical lesions, but none were found, the stock being unusually healthy. A technical lecture was that of Francis A. Thomson, who spoke on "A Sampling Experience With Metallics." as was also Stephen Rlckard's talk on "Note on an Electrical Method of Preventing , Boiler Scale." Both of the addresses created discussion and Interest. Today at 0 o'clock the delegates will visit the smelting plant of tho American Smelting and Refining compuny, and also the plant of the United States Smelting, Refining and Mining, company, where notes will bo taken and observations made. There will bo no afternoon session today, to-day, but in the evening there will bo two papers read and discussed. Frank Leonard's Leon-ard's on "Cyanldo Practice on Boulder County, Colo.. Ores," "V. H. Gottschalk's paper on "Technical Volumetric Mothods In General," and a discussion led bv II. C. Parmelee on tho determination of "Insoluble "In-soluble Slllclous Residue." Saturday will be taken up bv visits to different places. Among other points tho delegates will go to Saltalr. Saturday evening tlio formal banquet will take place at tho Commercial club. The organization Is designed for mutual mu-tual help. Very oflen a chemist desires the assistance of the metallurgist, whilo the metallurgist needs the chemist everv day. By bringing the two In closer touch by means of those conventions, the desired de-sired conditions It is hoped will he brought aboui. Most of the delegates are from Colorado and from other points in the West. Owing to the hoildav trips and vacations, many of the dolega"tos arc not hero, making this year's meeting smallor than before. A general Invitation Is extended to the public to attend. |
