WAS ILL AT INTERVALS SINCE LAST SEPTEMBER j Had Risen Rapidly in the Service Ser-vice of His Company Since 1878. PHILADELPHIA, Dec, 2S. President Presi-dent Alexander J. Cassatt of the Pennsylvania Penn-sylvania Railroad company died suddenly sudden-ly this afternoon. The announcement of his death was made from his office shortly before 2 o'clock in tho following bulletin: , "Mr. A. J. Cassatt, president of the Pennsylvania railroad, diod suddenly of heart disease at 1 p. in. today. The svinptoms were those known to the profession as Stokes-Adams Syncopo, and, as is often tho ca4e, under these circumstances, death was instantaneous." instantane-ous." Mr, Cassatt died in his city residence surrounded by the. members of tho farii-ily. farii-ily. Ho had been ailing ever since he returned last September from his summer sum-mer homo at Bar Harbor, whore ho contracted whooping cough from his grand children. This attack left him weakened and he did not go to his office of-fice for several weeks, but remained at his country home at Haverford. Lately at His Desk. Earlv in October Mr. Cassatt felt much fjettor and came regularly to his office for several weeks, when he wan again attacked bv illness, this timo with a heavy cold.' His exact condition was not publicly known and this gnvo rise to many rumors of serious illness and sudden 'death. He recovered sufficiently, sufficient-ly, however, to resumo his duties and was at Broad street station regulnrby until December 8, his birthday. That tthk Mm last dav ho was :Lt his office. Since that timo ho spent much of his time driving and at his home, transacting transact-ing only the most important business brought 'to his attention. He was out driving as late as last Monday. While not feeling as well as he had been, Mr. Cassatt rose from his bed today but did not leave his room. The family was not alarmed bb ho seemed to be in good spirits and no ono had the slightest thought of his death. About 1 o'clock, while sittintr on a chair, the final attack came. He was instantly rendered unconscious and when his attending physician arrived he found him dead. Biographical Sketch. Mr. Cassett was born in Pittsburg in 1S3D, was educated in Germany and at tho Troy Pol3'tochnic. Institute. Ho entered tho service of tho Pennsylvania in 1SC1 as a rodman. In 1867 ho bo-enrao bo-enrao superintendent of motive power and machinery and in 1S7S became general gen-eral superintendent of the Pennsylvania system. From this time on his rise was rapid and in 18S0 ho had bocomo first vice-president. Tn 1SS2 he resigned and did not again hold an official" position in the company until ho was elected to the presidency in 18S9. Mr. Cassatt planned and started the Groat Now York City tunnel system for the com-I com-I pany. |
