Attias yesterday scored a strong point over his adversary, Leon Skllrls, when Justice of tho Peace J. J. "Williams dismissed the suit brought against the doctor In which he was charged with practicing medicine In the State of Utah without a license. The case was dismissed upon motion of the District Attorney, after a part ot the witnesses for the prosecution had been examined. It having become clear to the State that there was no cause for action. ac-tion. Dr. Attlas's arrest on the charge was made on or about October 35, on a warrant war-rant which the doctor's friends declare was sworn out at the instigation of Mr. Skllrls, who for some time past has been an interpreter for and nn acknowledged ac-knowledged leader of the Greeks employed em-ployed by the railroads and smelters of this State. The arrest came very soon after Dr. Attias had undertaken tho work of organizing the Greek laborers Into a union in alllllation with the Western Federation of Miners. Dr. Attias was not found for several days after the warrant for his arrest was sworn out, and It was charged by his enemies that he was hiding out because be-cause he feared prosecution. His friends explained, however, that it was because he was engaged upon some important im-portant union work. When he was found the bond for his appearance was quite readily provided and the hearing upon the charge came up yesterday in the Justice court of West Jordan. The prosecution had subpoenaed a half dozen witnesses, all Greeks, but only three or four of them were examined. ex-amined. These were exceedingly careful care-ful In their statements on the witness stand, and they made no disclosures tending to incriminate the defendant. Finding that the other witnesses were no better equipped with information, the Prosecuting Attorney moved the dismissal of the case. It Is understood that the doctor's defense would have been that he has not practiced medicine in the State; that he has oilly been employed em-ployed as an interpreter by another physician who has a license to practice. |
