Show THE AMERICAN CANDIDATES. Mon Who Will Conduct tho Schools for the Benefit of the Pupils. Following are short biographical sketches of tho men selected at the convention con-vention last night as Ideal exponents of a public school system conducted on truo American lines. The persons selected arc well qaullfled to administer tho public school system on a sound business basis. They aro held In the highest esteem by thoso who know them and havo no taint of priestly domination about them: J. J. Coram. J. J. Corum, the candldato from the First ward. Is well known In real estato and mining circles, owning property In tho city and mines at Bingham Ho came to Salt Lake City 1-1 years ago from ' Colorado Colo-rado Springs. He was prominent In tho councils of the old Liberal party and was elected a member of the City Council on the Inat Liberal ticket. Mr. Corum Is Gs years old, a Republican In politics, and has always taken a groat Interest In tho development of the public school systom. B. F. Redman. The candidate from the Second ward, B. F, Redman. Is well known as the proprietor pro-prietor of the van and storage company of that name. Coming hero 11 years ago from Omaha, Neb., ho embarked In the coal business, leaving It seven years ago for his present occupation. He Is a Republican Re-publican In politics, a member of the Commercial club, and has three children attending the public schools. John D. Hairman. One of the most active of the younger workers In tho Republican party for several sev-eral years past has been John D. Hag-man, Hag-man, the nominee from the Third precinct. pre-cinct. Born and raised In this city, Mr. Ha;man received his education In the district schools and at tho university. Ho Is a son-in-law of A. F. Doremus. and has a strong following, especially among the younger voters of the Third. E. O. Howard. E. O. Howard, one of the nominees from the' Fourth, has been a resident of Salt Lake for tho past U years. He Is a Republican Re-publican in politics, and Is well known, especially among the business men of tho city, being a teller at Walker's bank. Mr. Howard Ib a native of oyracuse, N. Y., where he received his education. Ho Is deeply Interested In education and the welfare of tho public school, and Is sure to be a strong candidate. W. Mont Ferry. The other nominee from the Fourth, W. Mont Forry. Is one of the best known and moat popular younjr business men of the city. For tho past eight years ho has been a resident of Salt Lako City, and has been Identified largely with the mining Interests of the State. A graduate of the University of Michigan. Mr. Ferry Is naturally nat-urally Interested In education and the public schools, and would be a valuablo member of the Board of Education. He has always been an ardent Republican and taken an active Interest in the politics poli-tics of the city and Stale. W. J. Halloran. Few men are as well known In Salt Lako City as W. J. Halloran, who was nominated as the candldato In the Fifth precinct. Ho camo hero IS years ago from Colorado, receiving his education In tho public schools of that Stato. Mr. Halloran was greatly surprised to hear of his nomination, and feared that on account ac-count of business reasons ho would bo obliged to dccllno tho honor. He would not say definitely la3t night, however, that he would not accept. Mr. Halloran Is a Democrat. |
