Show I SENATOR SMOOT CALLS THOMAS first Witness tor the Defense. United States Marshal Has Served Four Subpoenas. Sub-poenas. William Hatfield, Glen Miller and Arthur Pratt Will Go Before Genate Committee. Ex-Gov. Arthur 1.. ThomaH Is the first man subpoenaed to appear beforo tho Senato commltteo In behalf of Senator Reed SmooC Tho subpoena was sered by United Stales Marshal B. B. Heywood yesterday. It was slgued by Senator J. C. Burrows, chairman of the Committee on Privilege and Elections, and had beoii Issued tor Mr. Thomas on December Decem-ber 22 Three more subpoenas were served during dur-ing tho year, one upon William Hatfield, another upon Glen Miller, tho third on Arthur Pratt. Mr Hatfield Is superintendent superin-tendent of the Victoria mlno near Eureka, Eu-reka, which is largely owned by Ed Looso and other Pn vo parties. Mr. Miller Mil-ler was formerly United States Marshal, and Arthur I'ratt Is at present warden of the Utah 8tate penitentiary. A Significant Fact. It Is understood that each of these sub-poonas sub-poonas was prepared In Washington Tho names of the witnesses throw but llttlu light upon tho probable course of tho defense. A most significant fuct, how-over, how-over, when taken In connection with tho simulated surprise of Mr Thomas and the rabid disclaimer of the Deseret News, is tho dato upon which tho Thomas subpoena sub-poena was mado out "If I have been subpoenaed. It Is all news to me, ' were the words of Mr Thomas, Quoted in tho News of December Decem-ber 30, eight days after ho had been chosen to appear for Senator Smoot. In the News of the same Issue the Washington Wash-ington dispatch to The Tribune was alluded al-luded to as a "grapevine," and treated with no end of levity. What People Will Ask. Tho questions that most people will naturally ask ire 'How did Senator Smoot come to subpoena Postmaster Thomas, and was tho witness subpoenaed without any previous knowledgo as to what he would testify to"" W!illo the names of the other witnesses to no called by tho defenso aro not yet given out. It is admitted that tho four served yesterday aro only a amall part of tho total number. |
