Some pardonable pride may be felt, hot only hy the publishers of thin paper, but by the people of Salt Lake in sending out broncast so creditable credi-table and truthful a reflex of the BO( lal and industrial onHltlons of the itv From the Inception of the enterprise the publishers have received the warm est encouragement, both verbal and pecuniary to cany on the work to 6uc- : .til completion. The business and professional nen of the city have responded, re-sponded, liberally, promptly and cheerfully cheer-fully to the Invitation to co-operate In an undertaking conceived and carried Into execution with an eye single to the advancement of the city's welfare. Some few there have been very few indeed who have deprecated the expenditure of money for an enterprise of this nature, on the ground that the outlay would result In no tangible advantage to the city of Bait Lake or its people. But there arc v-i'msi'i In every community communi-ty and Saht Lake is no exception to the rule. Such adV( rse and unfriendly criticism as the publication may receive will emanate from this class, but it will prove Innocuous. Astonishing Growth. Salt Lake has grown bo In the past few years in a business s-nse, as well I as In the number of Its buildings of a public and private character, that even old citizens will be "stonlshed to see the list of names and the business In which they are engaged as printed. The old reliables are there and In addition there are a very great many new ones. There are nrn.s on tn it list which are doing business that rivals the great stores of many of the cities of the Bast. There are manufacturers represented there who employ small armies of men and women. The great leaders In their various va-rious lines are all there. Some of the manufactories have branches of their business in other cities, with headquarters headquar-ters here In Salt Lake. There are wholesale houses In the list which go out to compete with Chicago, St. Louis and San Franclpco. and which do compete com-pete successfully with the same l)n"u of business In the more pretentious towns. Of the larpe retail establishments In Salt Lake dt is scarcely neceosnry to speak. They are so well storked, the quality and variety of goods sold are such that there In a constantly Increasing Increas-ing trade from all the territory naturally natur-ally tributary to Salt Lake. There Is no one of these firms that does not report an increased business for the year Just closed. , Not the least attractive feature of the proclamation, however. Is the larce number of email dealers and manufacturers manufac-turers that ar represented. We have all had an opportunity to witness how the business oaks have grown from small acorns that were planted A business, bus-iness, Just the same as a man. must have an Infancy before It reaches maturity. ma-turity. The showing that Is made by these smaller firms shows that they aro on the high road to prosperity, and that It will not be many years, should nothing noth-ing untoward happen, until thfj will also b. classed among the leading Institutions Insti-tutions of Salt Lake. There is always room at the top. The features of a business proclamation proclama-tion are something new as far as Salt I Lake Is concerned, but the popularity with which the suggestion met shows that this way of compiling the business firms of the city Is one that Is appreciated appre-ciated and that It will probably be a favorite fa-vorite In the future. It comes very close to being a business directory of the city of Salt Lake at the close of the year 1904. The banks of the city are well repre- dusfrles of special prominence Include mjniiig and smelting machinery, ma-Rented ma-Rented In the list and they are something some-thing of which the citizens may well be proud The prudence and sagacity of the bankers f Salt Lake are known all over the country. The, real estate Interests of Salt Lake, according to the gentlemen whose names are attached to the proclamation, are showing every symptom of attaining attain-ing their old-time proportions. This Is certainly a matter of congratulation, as there Is no other business which does more to put money Into circulation than I the exchange of properties and building Improvements. The contractors and builders report that the past season was exceptionally good, but that the coming season shows signs of a very large Increase.
