President Presi-dent Burt of the Pacific Coast leagno rendered a decision today which now leaves the second half of the baseball sea-son in an undecided state. Ilia ruling makes the closing of the second period a tie between the Tacoma and Los Angeles teams for first place in the race. IIi3 decision was based on a protost made August 23 concerning a game played the previous day at Portland between the Los iVngcles and Portland clubs. In that game, Baum of Los Angeles deliberately cut second base after having hav-ing made a safo hit. when two men were on bases, with two out. Both runners scored and Baum rested at third base. Tho ball was returned from the outfield and thrown to second sec-ond base, and Umpire McDonald called Baum out. Despite the fact that both runners had scored, Umpire McCarthy, who was at the plate, refused to allow the second run. which tied the score. Ills deciGlon gave Portland the game. Later La-ter McCarthy admitted he was in error. er-ror. Today President Burt summoned both McDonald and McCarthy to his oillce and they both said that nn error er-ror had been made, and that tho fifth run, which tied the score, should have been allowed to Los Angeles. President Presi-dent Burt accordingly threw out the game. This leaves Tacoma and Los Angeles tied for first place in the second sec-ond half. But President Burt, In view of tho fact that the season has ended, has taken no further action, and It Is probable prob-able that If extra games are played between Los Angeles and Tacoma It will be by arrangement' between Managers Man-agers Morley and Fisher. |
