Tho first International Interna-tional automobllo race, run In Cuba, was won today by the car owned by a Cuban, E. K Conlll. and driven, by a Cuban, Ernesto Carrlcaburn, defeating C- J. S. Miller's car driven by Joseph Tracy, by 1 minute 82 2-G seconds. aarrlcaburn's time over tho course, ch was 03 M-100 miles, wao 1 hour, GO minutes, 53 3-5 seconds, and his uverago per hour was C3 7-10 miles. Tho favorite since Friday, when E. R. Thomas's 00-horse power car was damaged, dam-aged, was O. F. Thomas's 80-horso power machine, driven by II. W. Fletcher. Tho latter, however, suffered a aeries of minor mishaps and roturncd a long way behind all the others. The local arrangements wero admirable. The grandstands on both sides of the road a fow yards beyond the starting placo, were occupied by a crowd of 2500 persons, and tnousanls of others lined tho roadway road-way In that vicinity and at many other points of the flfty-mllo stretch. President Palma and members of the Cabinet and tholr families, and various Government officials, wero In tho central boxes. Tho announcements of time wero telephoned from all the villages on the ccurac as tho racers dashed past, and megaphoned In Spanish and English from the Judges' stand. Tho crowd was Intensely Interested and there was considerable bottlng by Cubans. . Tho entire road was thoroughly patrolled by mounted Infantry, rurales and police and bicycle club members. |
