Show THE DEMOCRATS TDAY. At the State Democratic convention, which meets today, there will.no doubt' be some vigorous skirmishing. Probably Proba-bly thero will bo no direct instruction to the delegates fcent to St. Louis an to whom they muot support for President, but that there will be an effort to give tho convention an anti-Hearst tone, In consequence of the action of the Democratic Demo-cratic Hearst convention in Idaho on the polygamy question, and the Interference Inter-ference in and control of secular affairs af-fairs by the church leaders, is quite probable. The open fight is on the question of who shall be National Committeeman, and the lines arc drawn on the candidacies candida-cies of Judge O- W. Powers and the Hon. D. II. Peery. Underlying this, however, is tho question of lighting or not fighting any resolution which may tlon at St. Louis on the polygamy-question, and the move to transfer control of that and of marriage and divorce tolhe National Government. The friends of Judge Powers arc understood un-derstood to be opposed to making any aggressive fight In opposition to such a resolution in case It is offered, on the-theory the-theory that to do so would be to intensify inten-sify the determination to push such resolution res-olution and make It even stronger than might otherwise be the case, and that If Utah should make such a fight. It would not only precipitate the action that is feared, but deprive the delegates from this State of any Influence or consideration. considera-tion. On the other hand, the supporters of Mr. Peery are understood to be in favor of making a vigorous fight against any such resolution. And 111 the forecast In the Democratic morning" organ here yesterday morning Is correct, some of the church societies are Interesting themselves on this side of the contest. It so, It will not have a quieting effect, but quite the reverse: and the activity of Mr. B. H. Roberts on that side of the fight will add fuel to tho flame. Should this question coma up squarely square-ly In the Democratic convention todayt It will be a spectacle that will attract National attention, and the result will have National significance and Importance. Import-ance. There can be no doubt that in casting about for effective "issiiea" and points that will Svln votes throughout the country, many shrewd Democrats have come to the conclusion that there Is "meat" In this Issue for the Democrats. Demo-crats. In view of these points to come up, It Is certain that the convention today will be of an Importance far more than ordinary, or-dinary, and much beyond what a more convention for the selection of delegates to a. National convention would usually be considered. If the fight is In fact precipitated, it will of course be a hot one, for the dividing line betweeen the two forces is both wide and deep. |
