Show HONORS TO GENERAL ROSECRANS The honors to General Rosecranss memory on the occasion of the reinter ment of his remains at Arlington Nar tlonal cemetery were most impressive He nobly earned them too for his high services to the Nation during the War of the Rebellion He was successful In West Virginia in Kentucky and In Tennessee In the desperate battle of Stone River a commander with less tenacity and resource could easily have found good cause to give way but he held on with a valor and firmness worthy wor-thy of all praise and won the victory His advance through Tennessee the next summer was brilliant strategy till he got to the Cumberland mountains where he stopped for i long time He should have gone forward while the Confederacy was straining every effort to throw oft Grant at VIcksburg was the golden period for him to have made his advance1 upon Chattanooga which would have been then t an easy prey When he did advance the Confederate concentration was against him and being misled by false Information hemet he-met with a disaster at Chickamauga which sent him Into eclipse < He asa as-a noble gentleman a skilled tactician si devoted soldier his memory will always al-ways bo preserved among those who served under him one of whom writes this as one of the most highminded of men thouglufil and careful of his troops energetic and fearlsss In battle and patriotic to every drop of his hearts blood The tributes delivered yesterday to his memory were most admirable and in every way fit to be delivered over the bier of the true soldier sol-dier and manly officer that he was His memory will be a pride TO the country his example a worthy one to be cited for all time to come |
