Show THE MINES by james F obrien reno nev sept 8 the macuba silver tin copper mines company has recently been incorporated to take over and operate the macuba hill group of mines in the antelope district twenty miles wiest west of imlay if the name is long and seemingly takes in considerable territory it is still appropriate as the company owns 1580 acres of mineral ground and produces all the metals mentioned macuba hill being one of t the e very few places in the country where tin has been found in veins or lodes the seventy nine claims of the company completely cover a mountain of volcanic origin two miles long by one and one halt half miles wide which is known locally as ma juba hill the property nas been under development for nearly three years most of it having been under the direction of jack welch field man for the mason valley mines company naturally but a small portion of this immense acreage has been aven even prospected to date but an idea of its possibilities may be gained from the fact that with limited development there have already been shipped to the thompson smelter thirty three lots of ore aggregating about 2000 tons which averaged per cent copper and 14 ounces silver to the ton it is doubtful if there is a copper mine in nevada with a better record in this regard at the same stage of development ore that runs better than 12 per cent copper as it is broken down and shipped in carload lots is not common medium and low grade ores As is true with all big copper mines however the bulk of the income will come from the medium and lower grade ores in a report that was made some time ago after a thorough examination by wm koerner a prominent engiE engineer eer he figures that the macuba has tons of measurable sulphide ore that will go better than 3 per cent copper and ounces silver to the ton and 1000 tons going better than 12 per cent copper and 13 silver when a co conservative serva tive engineer figures tons of measurable ore it is usually a safe bet to figure on tons of probable ore fifteen to one concentration further on in his report mr koerner says although no test has been made on it the 3 per cent ore should give a 15 into I 1 ratio of concentration figuring on only 75 per cent extraction he also says the value of a ton of concentrates on 22 copper and silver at per ounce after making smelter r deductions but no ng treatment charges is on the 12 per cent ore he places a value of per ton with copper and silver figured at the above prices but both of those metals are now selling higher and there is every indication of a much greater advance the development up to this time has been in a leached beached zone the ore being found in lenses which have been protected from the leaching process but the big wealth of the mine is expected when the zone of secondary enrichment and the primary sul aphides are reached at or near the water level this is not an unsupported theory alone it has been demonstrated in many other mines possibilities for tin while the management so far has devoted nearly all its efforts to the development of copper the chances of opening up at macuba the only pay lode tine mine in america are considered excellent ore assaying as high as 68 per cent tin has been found and mr koerner concludes that part of his report which refers to the tin with the following this area showing intense action is represented on the surface by a prominent outcrop this together with the large amount of tourmaline and some fluorite which like tin are high temperature minerals are encouraging features though mention of this discovery of lode tin has not been made in print before in fact so averse was the management to publicity Dubli city that this Is the first published story of the macuba mine but the U S geological survey heard of it and sent adolph knopf to investigate he spent ten days in his examination and was greatly interested te cornwall england has long been noted for its lode tin mines ana it is said that the ore there is associated with copper as at macuba it may be interesting to note that tin was exported from cornwall to italy after if not before the invasion of britain by julius caesar which occurred 55 B C A deal is being negotiated for the taking over of a big block of treasury stock of the macuba silver tin copper mines company by a boston firm which represents some of the solid financiers of that city who have made fortunes from copper geo S brown one of renos prominent attorneys is president of the macuba company and jack welch will continue in charge at the mine |
