Brown of the juvenile court and his methods were both at attacked attacked tacked and defended in the meeting of o othe the board of education last night O 0 OW W Moyle and W J Newman criticised the court severely and Prof Byron Cummings strongly defended it The board was wa in committee of the whole at the time and the subject ot of enforcing enforcIng ing the compulsory education law both against children and their parents was under di dIscussion The committee on school work had reported in favor avor of invoking the aid of the courts as a last resort where parents refuse to send their children to school and provided that the truant officer should make formal ormal complaint Mr Moyle moved to amend y provid providing providIng ing that the facts should be laid be before before fore the juvenile court for such action as the judge of that court might see lit fit to take If We have a very active juvenile court remarked Mr Moyle in a tone that indicated his disapproval of the court Cummings Eulogizes Brown Mr CummingS eulogized Judge Brown and his work He said that the reputation of the court was becoming world wIde that a German committee appointed to investigate methods of dealing with juvenile delinquents was looking into the Salt Lake methods and said sald that Judge had other letters of inquiry from abroad as well as from many parts of the United States along the same line Mr Moyle replied promptly He Be said that if IC the court was being heard of around the world it was because of the th remarkable things it was doing which were wrong Mr Moyle criticised criticised dragging in parents before the court for failing to send their children to school He expressed a poor opinion of Judge Brown and remarked If I think some of those who are close to him will wish they had bad not been be before before fore they get through Later in the discussion Mr Newman attacked JUdge Brown and said his court had no dignity He expressed the belief that the city court had gone into effect Mr Cummings made another speech in defense of Judge Brown Finally the resolution to refer delinquency I cases to the juvenile court was adopted unanimously During the discussion Superintendent D B H Christensen stated that there are cases of de delinquency delinquency in hi the city at the present time To Buy Two Sites The board decided to buy two new sites for school buildings One Is a tract feet in dimensions in block 90 plat C in the northwestern part of the city This will be purchased from the Hubbard Investment company for 1500 and it was to engage Architect R H Kletting to draw plans and prepare specifications for a twelve room school building on the property The other site is 19 to be purchased from the Joseph R B Walker estate It Itis is 13 between Main and West Temple streets about a block south of Ninth South street and is feet in dimension It was also decided to advertise for forbids forbids bids for a gymnasium for the High school and for a combined slum and assembly hall hail the board to decide after the bids are received which sort ot of a building it will II erect PrIncipal pal George A Eaton of the High school addressed the board in favor of erect erecting ing an assembly hall ball Among other things he pointed out that at present when it I desired to hold a meeting of teachers for a lecture or for any other purpose an outside petition the city council to cause the Rio Grande West Western ern em Railway Rail company to construct a viaduct covering its tracks where they cross West Second South street also alsoto to construct for 2256 Asper Noall Company were given the contract for 1007 for Installing toilet rooms at the Longfellow school and Rossiter were given a plumbing contract for John W Power and A L Conley ap
