Show P PAUL Ul RESIGNS I FROM L D Da S 3 U Will G Get t Out of Institution Because of Trouble With the Faculty ACTION IS KEPT A SECRET B 8 S HINCKLEY SAID TO BE THE PROBABLE SUCCESSOR Professor Joshua H Pauls resignatIon tIon as president o of the Saints unIversity to take effect at th close of the present school year In June has been accepted by the unanimous vote of the board of trustees of that In Institution institution His successor has not been named but the appointment of Professor sor Bryant S Hinckley now of the Brigham ham Young university Is said to have been settled upon although the friends of Professor John A Widtsoe also of the Provo Prove institutIon made a hard fight for his appointment Professor Paul was asked by a representative representative of The Herald Tuesday night if he had tendered his resignation as president of the L D S university and he emphatically denied It He even een went so far as to e express press his Intentions of remaining g at the head of that although he had at the time the letter of acceptance of his resignation dated March 9 and signed by President Anthon H B Lund and Secretary Joseph S Wells President Lund said when Interviewed the same evening that the board of trustees had heard nothing of the resignation of Professor Paul but that he had expressed his intention of leaving the universIty withIn another year The board however had accept accepted ed Professor Pauls resignation several days prior to thIs tIme and mailed the letter of acceptance Row With the Faculty Trouble between Professor Paul and the faculty of the university is said to be the cause of his resignation Several times within the past year the board has taken a hand in some of the dis disputes disputes that have arisen between the faculty and Professor Paul This is given as the reason for his resignation His letter Is as follows To the Board of Trustees of the Latter day SaInts UnIversity Dear place herewith in your our hands my resignation to take ef feet at the close of the present school year in June My reasons are that the Interests of the institution require a change and I bell believe eve that this action Is the best thing I could do for the school under present circumstances I take this step moreover In pursuance of the mo me tire tive of all roy my official acts in this school namely its real and permanent advance advancement ment mentIn In taking leave of the institution I desire to t thank all those whose aid and good will have haye contrIbuted to Its growth and Improvement Tells of Growth The unvarying courtesy and good will of the board wIth whom In eight years of negotiations I have not had n a differ difference difference ence or but who on the contrary have hae sustained each policy I have enforced or er advocated advocated the generosIty of the general genera board of education whose contributions to the general maintenance of the school have arisen from about to about per year during my term ot of service or of service the sympathetic and generous friendshIp of President Joseph F and the first presidency the patronage of the i public causing the school to increase from about about 1200 students per year yea and the graduates from 4 to Zi 27 per year the financial aid which the friends of education in our midst have rendered causing an Increase In the property of the school from about to In value last and not least the good will of the thousands of young people who have haye attended and made their start In life Ufe under our all these con conditions conditions I scarcely know how sufficiently to express my appreciation These re results suIts have been due to the wise action of our trustees and the efficient labors of our able faculty In the past If in the future I can be of any as assistance assistance to thIs school it shall shaH be m my happy endeavor to render that service With the means at our disposal and under the that surrounded us usI usI I feel that Voe e could not have haye done much better And that the future of this school may be brighter anti and better than Its past has been that the higher educational and spiritual life may ever be the portion or of those who shall from year Jear to year throng these cheerful halis and that the watch watchful watchful ful and loving care of Him who Is the source of oC all intelligence and truth may be over those who as teachers and as students shall give and receIve Instruction instruction tion in this beloved are the sin sincere ere wishes of your our fellow servant servant ant in the ri righteous the holy cause of education Respectfully yours J H PAUL The board of trustees will meet with the student body at the school assembly this morning It is stated that some important business will be trans franz transacted acted |
