ESCAPED D THE BEARS BUT BROKE HIS NECK New York Jan 18 In an attempt to avoid death d ath in a Dit of bears today Joseph Maher Maker a gardener at the Bronx Zoo leaped leaDed from a falling failing tree a beaver weaver pond and was Instantly killed Maher was pruning a tree between betwee l the bear jear Inclosure and nd the beaver pond Unknown to him the roots of the tree had lad been eaten away by the beavers and when he reached the toy tol to it gave way with his weight The falling trunk runk swayed toward tow rd the bear pit and the gardener tried to swing himself clear of the branches Into the pond i adjoining but his head struck the edge 11 of the tank breaking his neck I
