Show THU POLITICAL PARSON. Tho political parson bo of tko I'amotu Harlan letter, bcscecliiDg the brethren, yfia verily, to return liarlan to the aeuato, anil which failed to make tho Iowa Mulhodints como to time; he of tho polygamy tlebato notoriety, wherein ho got so badly worsted that ho lclt in quiet nesa like a whipped poodle with iU caudto appendage trailing; trail-ing; ho who does tho praying at the Henato of tho Unilod States terms, two dollars a minute; this identical political parson has wrestled with lWidcnt Grant in behalf of brother MeKcan, and against that son of Belial, Geo. 0. iiatcs; and tho prayerful prayer-ful political parson urgos the President to persist in tho prosecution (persecution) (persecu-tion) of the Mormons, that ho may be avonged for his theological defeat in the tabernacle in this city. Wo havo heard so much of priestly interference in matters political in Utah, that, wore wo not better informed, in-formed, we might consider this action of Newman's a little strange. But the fact is, politics and sectarianism aro even moro strongly combined in these United States than in Britain where thcro is a church by law established. Newman brought his entire priestly influence to bear with tho Methodists of Iowa to secure tho re-election of Harlan to tho United States senate, but failed in his cfi'ort and got effectually snubbed into the bargain. He came to Utah about a year and a half ago preceded by the blowing of ram',s horns recognizing the religious character of polygamy, and announcing with blatant pompous-ucss pompous-ucss how ho was coming to crush the advocates of polygamy by irresistible loie and scriptural reasoning. He was to come, to sec and to conquer; but lie cameras seen through and suffered a galling defeat. Smarting under that defeat, and animated by a Christian yearning to be avenged, ho has lost no opportunity of invoking the strong arm of the law, nerved by bigoted prejudice, preju-dice, to crush the men and the system whom he could not meet successfully in honest argument. He has been charged with being the instigator and originator of the present crusado, and MeKean has beeu publicly credited by lion's Jierald, tho leading Methodist orgau, as the littiug tool to carry out tho purposes of Newman, the camp meeting fraternity and company; and now we have Newman exerting his intlucucc with President Grant "to persist in the prosecution of the Mormons. Mor-mons. ' ' And this is a specimen of the advanced ad-vanced liberal sentiment of the age! And he is ono of tho leading individuals individ-uals that declaim against priestly interference in-terference in political affairs in Utah! .Evidently unless there is a speedy change, the charge of theocratic rule bearing sway will have to bo directed against the federal capital instead of Salt Lake city. |
