Show AMUSEMENTS ROMEO AND JULIET The long awaited opera burlesque came off at tine te theatre last night and society turned out in force to show its appreciation of I the Orpheus clubs OrIheus effort The upper part of the house was almost deserted desert-ed but down stairs there was a big crush for first nighters half a hundred society ladies had the front rows usually usu-ally devoted to bald heads and they kept up a running merry fire of laughter laugh-ter and applause a stall draped with flags a occupied by Governor and Mrs Wells and party The burlesque is all that its name implies a miscellaneous miscella-neous hodgdodgery of music and fun a broad travesty upon Shakespeares play I is presented in a style quite gorgeous the thirty or forty members engaged being arrayed In handsome costumes and gotten up generally quite regardless of expense all this makes the ridiculous rhymes the puns and the local gags with which it reeks from beginning to end more than usually hilarious and accompanied by a host of excellent musical numbers most of them rendered in the clubs best style it all makes up an evening of merriment merri-ment and enjoyment Its only fault is that it is too long drawn out faul acts of the best burlesque going could hardly fail to grorw a little wearisome toward the close There was some sidesplitting side-splitting farce characterization notably notbiy the old Capulet of Mr Spencer whose part has but little real opportunity and the muse of Mr Westervelt both of whom kept the laughter going con tinuously Mr Pyper a very handsome and strong legged Romeo made the singing hit < of the night and was encored cored several times Mr Sherman could hardly have been bettered as betered Juliet and his very taking makeup indicated the tasteful presence of sis terly care The big hit of the night was undoubtedly made by the male ballet an excruciating terpsichorean performance led by Mr Haskell 111 Haskel who also filled the role of the apothecary but with less success Mr McCoys Mercutio and Mr Halons Tybalt were fair and Mr Gillespies friar was unc tiously suggestive of Friar tousl suggestve Tuck and Little Puck combined The chorus did good work under the careful direction of Mr Peabody but we suggest it would be heard to better advantage advantge if it were to follow the example of opera choruses and sing nearer flue front We also think some of the sing ing numbers should be cut to shorten the performance several of the college efforts especially could best be spared The last performance will be given tonight to-night and it ought to draw a second crowd AT THE GRAND Business took the inevitable drop last night The Silver Lining while it went more smoothly than on the opening can hardly be classed as a great play well done as I is by the Grands players AT THE LYCEUM There was a second very good house both upstairs hearty and down welcome Clark again receiving a IN OLD KENTUCKY opens Here again tomorrow night The advance sale began yesterday RICES 1492 comes to the theatre next Monday Tuesday and Wednesday Wednes-day Charles Osgowl th advance manager and am old theatrical man is in town representing the big show Rates will jump 50 per cent for this engagement TABERNACLE EVENT The grand concert to be given in the tabernacle Friday night will seem like the musical music-al climax of the state inauguration the decorations will all be left in place and illuminated at night will ad iuminated wi appear to greater advantage even than they did in daylight The governor and legislature it is expected will be expeted wi present pres-ent in a body Altogether this concert I will be made a gala occasion |
