Show I COL WINDER CANED DcMeret Agricultural Manufacturing Agiclurnl antac turing Society Honors Its President Presi-dent At 10 oclock and just before the I moving of the Inaugural procession on i I Monday the directors of the D A 111 I society met at the secretarys office in the Constitution building and worked a pleasant surprise on Colonel John R Winder the president of that I society and one of the oldest workers In behalf of the territorial fairs The I meetinir was called to order and Secretary I Secre-tary PVper was requested to read a I I resolution which had been adopted at a previous meeting The resolution was a follows At a private meeting of the board of directors of the Deseret o Agiculurl and Manufacturing society so-ciety held December 1 1895 the following fol-lowing resolution was unanimously adopted Whereas The fooard of directors desire de-sire to express their appreciation of the labors and kind consideration of Colonel John R Winder In his official capacity as president of the D A M society therefore be it Resolved That a committee consisting consist-ing of Directors Stars Empey and Simon Si-mon be appointed to purchase a gold beaded cane on behalf of all the directors di-rectors and t a suitable time to pre l sent the same in the name of the directors di-rectors to their respected and worthy fellow laborers Mr Simon then presented Colonel Winder with a beautiful goldhead cane properly Inscribed and bearing proclamation date January 4 1S96 and In G neat speech expressed the esteem and confidence felt for the president by his associates and expressed ex-pressed the hope that he might carry old the cane until he should be 100 years oldPresident President Winder responding said that he was taken by surprise and felt overwhelmed with the expression of good will on behalf of the directors He had enjoyed his two years labor very much and felt satisfied with the work of the board and especially with the success of the last fair Colonel Winder said he had been connected with the society from the first year of its organization This was in 1856 forty years aco In that year he was elected a director under Edward Hunter Hun-ter then resident He continued a director durIng the incumbency of President Woodruff whom he succeeded suc-ceeded as the societys president He continued in this office until 1890 and was reappointed president in 1804 He could not help contrast the condition 11 the past and those surrounding the people at the present time Under statehood the society should accomplish accom-plish a great work in developing the resources of this glorious commonwealth common-wealth He said Let your watch cry b progression and the industries of the state will feel your influence and help Personally I dont know whether I shall live the hundred years as wished by Mr Simon or not bu whatever number of years I do live 3 desire to fill them worthily and for Uw good of neonle In all his labors Colonel Winder said this was the first time he had ever been honored in this manner and hoped he should continue to live in the esteem of the directors and of all his coworkers and friends Handshaking followed and the meeting parade adjourned to join In the |
